Integrity for thee, casinos for me: The NCAA’s gambling lie | Opinion

Before we get into dissecting the latest round of self-inflicted stupidity from theNCAA, there has to be a red line somewhere.

USA TODAY Sports

IfTexas Techquarterback Brendan Sorsbywagered on his teamwhile at Indiana in 2022 — whether he played or not, and no matter how much he won — it’s going to be be extremely difficult for the NCAA to ignoresome form of punishment.

A suspended percentage of the season, or a complete loss of eligibility, something must happen. You can’t have players gambling on their own teams, no matter the amount of money.

ARMOUR:Brendan Sorsby's gambling addiction a symptom of our broader illness

The integrity of the game, and future of the sport depends on it.

With that out of the way, it’s here where we introduce the remarkably ironic and brazen embrace of gambling by an NCAA member institution: the University of Arizona’s football stadium is named after a casino.

That’s right, Casino Del Sol paid Arizona$60 million over 20 yearsfor naming rights to Arizona Stadium. The Tucson casino and resort has a sports book, five betting windows and 15 self-service kiosks.

But we’re not done yet with this wildly inappropriate dalliance of the NCAA and gambling, not by a long shot.

Three years ago, theBig Tenbegan announcing weekly injury reports of its football teams. A stunning move from the conference that holds itself higher than all others. Legends and Leaders, no less.

A year later, theSECfollowed, and a year after that, the Big 12 and ACC joined the club — and college football had officially let the wolf through the door.

I ask you, why do the conferences release injury reports? Why does the NFL, the largest money-maker in professional sports history, have injury reports?

And if the train is barreling down the tracks, why stop it? The NCAA has all but locked up its longterm dream of expanding the annual men’s basketball tournamentto 76 teams, and as much as hoop purists want to believe, it’s not about more teams, more access. It's about gambling.

Embrace it when you need to, decry it when you have to.

The Big Ten last July held its annual Media Days ― a four-day celebration of the ascending football Power conference ―at the monstrous Cosmopolitan resort and casino in Las Vegas. And if all that doesn’t do it for you, here comes the hammer.

The College Football Playoff national championship game will be played this season in — wait for it — Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. It takes some stones to be that ridiculously two-faced.

Meanwhile ― and I know this will shock you (sarcasm font) ― the 2028 Final Four will be played in Allegiant Stadium, too.

Hey kids, don’t gamble, but you're going to play the most important games of NCAA sports competition in the gambling capital of the world!

At the very least, the NCAA has dialed back the zero tolerance narrative of gambling to avoid the obvious 12,000-pound gorilla in the room. What used to be a mortal sin — Rick Neuheisel was once fired by Washington after participating in an NCAA tournament pool — is now just an oddly structured agreement between the NCAA and gambling.

You scratch my back with millions, and I won’t say you’re the devil. And I’ll throw in a couple of championship events, you know, for the effort.

The hypocrisy is enough to make you puke.

Soone member institution of the NCAA knew of Sorsby’s gambling problems, and another found out months after he transferred there. But only after someone — just some random someone, I’m sure ― informed the NCAA police of the problem.

Gee, I wonder how that happened?

The Southwest Conference has come full circle, everyone. From the renegade conference that ate itself alive in the late 1980s by siccing the NCAA on each other for recruiting violations, to the revamped, rebranded Big 12 that began by adding a handful of former Big Eight teams, and eventually survived by adding from the Group of Five.

And now all the way back to the Southwest Conference.

When the NCAA used the dreaded death penalty on a football program for the first and only time, SMU was forced to cancel the 1987 season (and couldn’t play a home game in 1988) — and the resulting carnage was the beginning of the end of the SWC.

The only person who loses this time around is Sorsby. Depending on the severity of the penalty.

Because, you know, integrity.

Both will be eligible to play when the series resumes Monday with Game 5 in Denver.

The incident was evidently sparked when Minnesota'sJaden McDanielstook an uncontested layup with 2.1 seconds left and the Timberwolves already leading by 14 — a play the Nuggets took exception to, given how the game had been decided.

Jokic, the NBA said, “initiated the incident by confronting and shoving” McDaniels in reaction to that play. Randle, the league said, “escalated the incident by forcefully inserting himself into the scrum and shoving Nuggets guard-forward Bruce Brown.”

Jokic and Randle were assessed technical fouls and ejected from the game.

“He scored when we’d stopped playing,” Jokic said. “You guys saw what happened.”

The teams are meeting in the postseason for the third time in the last four years. Minnesota leads the series 3-1, but will be without guard Donte DiVincenzo for the rest of the season because of a torn Achilles and will be without fellow guard Anthony Edwards indefinitely because of a knee injury. It was Tucker's only hit of the game after starting 0 for 4.

Jake Eder (1-0) earned his first major league victory, allowing one hit in one inning of relief.

The Dodgers improved to 3-7 when trailing after seven innings.

Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks (0-2) walked Andy Pages and he scored on Shohei Ohtani’s ground-rule double in the ninth, pulling the Dodgers to 4-3. Pinch-hitter Dalton Rushing walked and Freddie Freeman was intentionally walked to load the bases before Tyler Phillips replaced Fairbanks, who appeared to have a physical issue.

Phillips struck out Will Smith, leaving the Dodgers down to their last out. Tucker singled to center, scoring Ohtani and Rushing.

Liam Hicks gave the Marlins a 4-2 lead with a three-run homer off World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the fifth.

Facing an 0-2 count, Hicks connected on a 92-mph splitter with two outs in the fifth that landed in the lower right-field seats, scoring Jakob Marsee and Xavier Edwards, who both walked.

Yamamoto gave up four runs and five hits over five innings in his shortest outing of the season. The right-hander struck out four and walked a season-high four. His streak of five consecutive quality starts to open the season ended.

Marlins starter Chris Paddack allowed two runs and four hits in four innings. He struck out one.

Down 4-2, the Dodgers left the bases loaded in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Alex Call and Ohtani singled and Freeman walked before Smith grounded out against reliever Andrew Nardi to end the inning.

The Marlins trailed 2-1 when Otto Lopez scored on shortstop Hyeseong Kim's fielding error in the fourth.

Celtics' Brad Stevens named NBA Executive of Year

Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens was named the NBA Basketball Executive of the Year for the second time in three seasons on Tuesday.

Field Level Media

Stevens' Celtics finished with the second-best record (56-26) in the Eastern Conference in 2025-26 and secured a top-two playoff seed for the fifth time in his five seasons in his current role.

Boston accomplished that despite parting ways with Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday before the season and only having All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum for 16 games after he recovered from an Achilles injury.

Stevens, who also won the award in 2023-24, is the 12th executive to receive the honor multiple times since it was first presented in 1972-73.

Stevens, 49, received 11 first-place votes and 69 total points in voting by his fellow executives. Atlanta Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh was second with 41 points, one more than Detroit Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon.

Before joining Boston's front office, Stevens served as the team's head coach for eight seasons and tallied a 354-282 record. During his 13-year tenure with the franchise, the Celtics have made 12 playoff appearances.

The Celtics currently have a 3-1 lead in their first-round series with the Philadelphia 76ers. Game 5 is on Tuesday night in Boston.

Yankees set for Elmer Rodríguez's big league pitching debut as roster shuffling continues

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Right-hander Elmer Rodríguez, one of the Yankees' top prospects, is set for his major league debut Wednesday as New York tweaks the bottom of the rotation while awaiting the return of Carlos Rodón.

Associated Press

Rodríguez was already in the Yankees clubhouse Tuesday, telling the story of the late-night summons at a hotel informing him that he was headed to Texas with a plan to start the finale of a three-game series against the Rangers.

The Yankees have been shuffling their roster, but still have a move to make to clear space for the 22-year-old who pitched for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic last month.

Infielder Max Schuemann was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesdayin place of Giancarlo Stanton, who went on the 10-day injured list after straining his right calf Friday in Houston.

Rodríguez is taking right-hander Luis Gil's spot in the rotation after Gil was sent to Triple-A following a rough start in a7-4 loss to the Astros.

The Yankees filled Gil's place on the roster with outfielder Jasson Domínguez, who was in the lineup against the Rangers as the designated hitter for the second consecutive game Tuesday night.

Manager Aaron Boone declined to say what roster move was coming to make room for Rodríguez, who had a 1.27 ERA in four Triple-A starts this year after climbing from Class A to Triple-A last season.

“He’s impressive,” Boone said. “I’ve really been impressed with a lot of our young guys that are kind of knocking on the door, Elmer included in that, about to be big leaguers, feel like they have a chance to be longtime big leaguers. As well as being a talented pitcher, he seems to have a really good way and makeup about him that should serve him well.”

Rodríguez pitched three scoreless innings in his only WBC appearance for his native Puerto Rico.

“It was a great experience to pitch there and obviously close to the same thing you're going to have here in the bigs,” said Rodríguez, who said his family was in transit to see him face 15-year veteran Nathan Eovaldi of the Rangers. “I feel like it just prepared me more and gave me a little bit of getting my feet wet.”

Boone estimated Rodríguez would get at least two starts as the Yankees anticipate the return of Rodón, the left-hander awaiting his season debut coming off left elbow surgery in October.Rodón made his first rehab startlast week.

The Yankees decided to put Rodríguez in front of the other starters because it was close to his scheduled Tuesday start in Triple-A. New York is off Thursday, which means right-hander Will Warren is the likely starter Friday night at home against Baltimore.

Boone has said he is hopeful Stanton will be ready to come off the IL as soon as he's eligible, but won't commit to a timetable. Neither will the 36-year-old slugger who has dealt with similar issues throughout his career.

“I really don’t have much for you guys,” Stanton said Tuesday. “I’ve got to move around. It’s good that it’s not a high grade, but at the same time, you’ve got to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Rockets start strong, don't let up to beat Lakers, stay alive in series

Amen Thompson scored a game-high 23 points, Tari Eason added 20 and the Houston Rockets averted elimination with a 115-96 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night in Game 4 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Field Level Media

All five starters scored in double figures for the Rockets, who played without Kevin Durant (ankle) for the third time in the series. Reed Sheppard chipped in 17 points on 4-for-7 3-point shooting while Alperen Sengun (19 points) and Jabari Smith Jr. (16 points) rounded out the balanced offensive attack. Eason and Smith grabbed eight rebounds apiece.

"We said we didn't want to let that last 30 seconds defeat us in another game, and we kind of put that behind us," Houston coach Ime Udoka said, referring to the team's Game 3 loss. "The focus was good today, and I think just in general, guys have pride, so you don't want to obviously get swept.

"We understood how well we played last game, and that was the big-picture perspective we had. We played a really good three quarters, and don't let that last 30 seconds take away from what you did. I think it was good carryover tonight."

The Rockets made headway by forcing 24 turnovers that they converted into 30 points. Houston scored 23 fastbreak points and limited the Lakers to 5-for-22 3-point shooting (22.7%).

"We understand that if we want to win this series, we have to protect the ball," LeBron James said. "The turnovers obviously killed us from the start to the finish."

After dominating Game 3 and co-authoring the Lakers' overtime victory, James (10 points, nine assists) and Marcus Smart (nine, five) shot a combined 5 of 17 from the floor. Deandre Ayton finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds but was ejected with 5:41 remaining in the third quarter after elbowing Sengun in the neck and incurring a flagrant-2 foul.

The Lakers will carry a 3-1 series lead back to Los Angeles for Game 5 on Wednesday.

Houston seized an 18-17 lead on a Sengun dunk at the 3:19 mark of the first quarter and didn't look back. The Lakers shot 41.2% (7 of 17) in the first period, missed both of their 3-pointers and conceded eight points off eight turnovers. Sengun played the entire first period for the Rockets.

"This is a top-10 defense the entire season," Lakers coach JJ Redick said about the Rockets. "It's obviously very challenging without your two leading scorers (Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves) to generate offense. We'll take a look at the process again on that end as well.

"Our points per shot and our expected points per shot were slightly below our season average, so to me, it goes back to the two keys: Take care of the ball. We'll look at that and how we can be better there."

The Rockets used a 16-4 run bridging the opening two periods to help extend to a 37-28 lead via a Sengun three-point play at the 6:35 mark of the second. When the Lakers sliced that deficit to three points, Josh Okogie keyed a 10-2 rally with a 3-pointer. Thompson added a pull-up jumper and a three-point play before Sheppard capped the run with a layup.

The Lakers shot 58.8% in the second quarter (10 of 17) but committed six turnovers in the frame and trailed 56-47 at the break. Houston pulled away in the third, opening the second half with a 12-4 burst before Eason drilled a corner 3 and Sengun completed another three-point play that pushed the lead to 76-55.

The Rockets led by as many as 28 points.

“You don’t, you drink,” he jokes about how he prepared for the evening. “I'm gonna have to start drinking soon.”

TheJay Kellystar also shared an insight into how his children — twins Ella and Alexander, 8 — have been watching his movies as he reflected on his career.

Revealing that he doesn’t tend to watch his films now he’s older because it’s “hard” to see how he looked in his younger years, George said that he’s made an exception for 2009’sFantastic Mr. Fox.

"It's a weird thing. As you get older, it's hard to watch movies when you were younger because you're like, holy s---, that doesn't even look like me anymore," he tells PEOPLE. "You know, I'm watching because I've got 8 year olds, I'm watchingFantastic Mr. Fox, which is a little easier because it's not really me, it's just my boys. And that's kind of fun because the kids are slowly figuring out what I do for a living."

"I don't know that he knew how profound it was when he said I wasn't Batman. A couple of weeks ago, I finally showed it to him," he continued. "It wasn't great for grown-ups, but it's great for 8-year-olds, so he loved it."
