Kevin Smith tells PEOPLE about how Ben Affleck's "potty mouth" almost lost him a role in 1995's Mallrats

Smith said he 'fell in love' with Affleck while making the movie and wrote 1997's Chasing Amy with him in mind

Smith and Affleck went on to film many projects together, including in 1997's Chasing Amy and 1999's Dogma

Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck have collaborated on some iconic films, but it almost didn't happen because of Affleck's "potty mouth."

Speaking to PEOPLE exclusively, Smith, 55, says that his bond with Affleck, 53, began when the actor came to audition for his 1995 film Mallrats. Producer James Jacks saw Affleck's name on the list and said, Smith remembers, "Oh God, Ben Affleck's coming."

Smith asked why that was his reaction. "Oh, because he's got a potty mouth," Jack said. "He's always cursing. We had him in Dazed and Confused. There were only a few uses of the word f--- in Dazed and Confused, but when Affleck got there, he increased it. Every scene he's throwing f---- around like crazy."

Jacks warned, "We don't want him in this movie. You've got enough bad language in the movie."

The day Affleck came in, Smith remembers, news broke that Affleck and Matt Damon had sold their script for Good Will Hunting for $800,000. "So I just read it that morning and then Ben was coming in for the audition that day," Smith says. "So when he came in, I said, 'Hey, man, congrats. What are you doing here?' . . . And he's like, 'I thought Clerks was pimp.' " Smith's first movie, 1994's Clerks was Smith's ultra-low budget film that became a cult classic.

"So he auditioned and much to Jim's chagrin, he was the guy," Smith says, remembering Affleck "wore the character very, very well." In the movie, Affleck plays Shannon, a cruel store manager who terrorizes the people who shop at the mall.

"Working with him on set over the month and change we made Mallrats out in Minnesota, that's where I fell in love with Ben Affleck and discovered who he was," Smith says. "He's so f------ funny, so smart, so charming. And here he was playing bullies in movies, including my own."

Smith says that while making Mallrats, Affleck was also balancing working on the Good Will Hunting script. Smith remembers three times Affleck asked for permission to go back to L.A. Smith gave it every time.

"Then I'd go back to my office later in the day and there would be a thank-you note," Smith says. Affleck wrote, "Hey man, I want to thank you for letting me go to Los Angeles and do this and take care of my script. I'm having such a great time on this movie, man. This is great. Thank you, Ben Affleck." Smith called it "so sweet" and "so polite." After the movie wrapped, Affleck invited Smith to come hang out with him whenever he was in L.A.

Smith and Affleck reunited multiple times, including in 1997's Chasing Amy and 1999's Dogma. Smith says that when he and Affleck hung out after Mallrats, he was already casting him in Chasing Amy in his head. "I was like, 'God, this dude should be a leading man. I don't understand why he's not a leading man,'" he explains.

It was only after months of working on Chasing Amy that he decided to tell Affleck about it. He remembers calling him and telling him, "'I just wanted you to know I've been working on this script Chasing Amy, and I'm writing the lead for you to play.' And there's dead silence. And after a beat, he goes, 'Finally.' "

Affleck has also appeared in Smith's movies 2001's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, 2019's Jay & Silent Bob Reboot and 2006's Clerks 2.

Jake Paul is a little more than two weeks away from entering the ring to face WBA lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis on Friday, November 14, at Miami's Kaseya Center.

This will be Paul's second fight of the year, following his unanimous decision victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June. Paul has a record of 12 wins and one loss, including seven knockouts. Davis will also enter the ring for the second time this year and boasts an undefeated record of 30 wins and one draw. The match against Paul comes as a surprise, as Davis was previously expected to have a rematch with Lamont Roach Jr., who is the only opponent to have drawn with Davis in his career.

Here is how to watch the Paul vs. Davis boxing event.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Bills coach Sean McDermott put to rest any suggestion of a disconnect between him and coordinator Joe Brady on how they view Buffalo's suddenly struggling passing attack.

McDermott welcomed a question on the issue Wednesday by saying he and Brady are on the same page, two days after they presented contradictory assessments. McDermott said the passing game needed to improve, while Brady said he had no concerns.

"I'm aware of what he said and how it was said," McDermott said. "We see it the same way, so we're in a good spot."

Assurances aside, the lingering concerns aren't going away. Buffalo's receivers are having trouble getting open down field, forcing Josh Allen to throw short passes and hope players can generate yardage after the catch.

The Bills (5-2) didn't need a strong passing attack last Sunday, when James Cook rushed for a career-best 216 yards in a 40-9 win over Carolina. The question is whether a similar approach can work this weekend, when Buffalo hosts Kansas City (4-3) in what's become an annual showdown of AFC contenders.

It's a rematch of last season's AFC championship game, which the Chiefs won 32-29. That outcome was sealed when Allen's desperation fourth-down pass attempt fell through the hands of tight end Dalton Kincaid in the final minutes.

McDermott seeks balanced offense

On Monday, McDermott noted how the passing game lagged behind the running attack against Carolina.

"The results in the running game were clear to see for everyone. Not so much in the passing game," McDermott said. "And it's something that we have to continue to work on as coaches and figure that piece out."

Allen struggled in the first half, going 6 of 13 for 66 yards, before finishing 12 of 19 for 163 yards and a touchdown. He completed just one pass that traveled beyond 20 yards. Khalil Shakir's 54-yard TD came on a 4-yard catch, with the receiver doing the rest.

McDermott's goal is to keep the offense balanced, and his concerns date to Allen's struggles in two straight losses before the win over the Panthers.

Brady says no issues vs. Panthers

Brady, who spoke after McDermott on Monday, saw things differently.

The third-year coordinator began by saying Buffalo didn't need to pass the ball against Carolina because of how effective Cook was.

"I have no concerns with the pass game," Brady said. "Obviously, I'd love to go every game and run for 200 and throw for 300, but that wasn't how the game needed to be won."

Brady then defended the passing attack, noting how Allen threw for 251 yards in the fourth quarter alone to rally Buffalo from a 15-point deficit in a 41-40 season-opening win over Baltimore.

It wasn't until he was reminded of the offense's struggles in losses to New England and Atlanta that Brady acknowledged some deficiencies.

"When you look at us the last few weeks, we have to obviously improve in the pass game," he said, before referring to the Bills hurting themselves by getting into third-and-long situations. "I wouldn't say it's been hard. But in the situations that we're in, we're not helping ourselves get out of some of those situations."

2024 deja vu?

The issues appear similar to last season, when Buffalo's offense sputtered in losses to Baltimore and Houston in Weeks 4 and 5.

General manager Brandon Beane responded by acquiring veteran receiver Amari Cooper. Though Cooper's production was limited, his presence drew the attention of defenses and opened space for other receivers.

Beane has yet to make a move, and has little room under the salary cap to add talent before the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday.

Allen said whatever issues are hindering the passing game start with him.

"I've got to be better when we have those opportunities," Allen said. "We have an opportunity this week against a team that's been the best team in the league for a really long time."

Practice squad moves

WR Gabe Davis was elevated from practice squad injured reserve to the practice squad roster. The 26-year-old has been recovering from a torn meniscus in his left knee and signed with the Bills in September. He spent his first four seasons with Buffalo before playing for Jacksonville last year.

Buffalo also signed DT Tommy Akingbesote to its practice squad. He played in college at Maryland and was the Dallas Cowboys' seventh-round draft pick in April.

Jordan Spieth, Akshay Bhatia and Billy Horschel were announced Wednesday as the three players who will fill out the 20-player field at this year's Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

As expected, tournament host Tiger Woods will not play after undergoing back surgery on Oct. 10 that will prevent him from playing in the event at the Albany Golf Course in Nassau from Dec. 4-7.

It is unknown what the potential timeline for a return to competition is for Woods, who will turn 50 on Dec. 30.

The most recent tournament for the 15-time major champion was the Open Championship in July 2024, where he missed the cut. Woods also had surgery in March to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Meanwhile, two-time defending champion and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler highlights this year's Hero World Challenge field.
