NBA Playoffs 2026: LeBron James, Lakers biggest underdog for their first-round series since 2013

The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most storied franchises in NBA history and accustomed to winning championships and advancing far into the postseason.

Yahoo Sports

They’re not used to being an underdog — especially a big one — in the first round of the playoffs.

But with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves both sidelined for at least the first portion of Los Angeles’ Round 1 matchup with Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets, that’s exactly where the Lakers find themselves.

Los Angeles opened as a +550 underdog against Houston in Round 1 atBetMGMsportsbooks, with the Rockets a massive -800 favorite. It’s the fifth-biggest underdog the Lakers have been in a first-round series since 1988 — perSports Odds History— and the biggest since they were +650 against the San Antonio Spurs back in 2013.

The Spurs swept the Lakers 4-0 in that series.

Los Angeles has been an underdog of +550 or worse four other times in that time span, and hasn’t won one of the series. Of course, in three of them, the Lakers were at least a 10-1 underdog (implied probability of 9%), including a 20-1 underdog against the Phoenix Suns in 1993.

Can LeBron pull off some more postseason magic and at least extend the series until either Reaves or Doncic can return?

The Rockets are 4.5-point road favorites in Game 1 on Saturday (8:30 p.m. ET, ABC).

Two days after her family took to social media to announce that the reality show subject had died, Martinez's mother, Staci Thurman, has revealed toTMZthat she was initially hospitalized on March 29 after suffering from medical issues that included fluid in her heart and lungs.

Thurman told the outlet that Martinez was subsequently placed in a medically-induced coma and put on a ventilator. She did not wake up and ultimately died of congestive heart failure. Funeral arrangements have yet to be made.

One day prior to announcing the tragic news, Martinez's sister, Lindsey Cooper, penned a social media post on Friday asking people to share their prayers and be respectful during Martinez's health battle.

"Today is national siblings day and it for sure was a hard one," Cooper wrote viaFacebook. "I haven’t made any post or let many [people] know but my sister Dolly is in the hospital and is fighting for her life. At this time I ask for prayers and privacy as we as a family navigate through this hard time"

On Saturday, Cooper was the one to share that her sister had died. In the touching tribute, she wrote, "Dolly had the brightest personality she could light up any room with her laughter, her kindness, and her loving spirit. She had a way of making everyone feel special, and her warmth will stay with us forever."

Martinez appeared on season 10 of the hit TLC reality show, which documents the years-long journey of individuals who weigh around 600 pounds as they strive to lose weight and potentially undergo gastric bypass surgery. In her 2021 episode, Martinez weighed just under 593 pounds, and relied on supplemental oxygen.

The reality show subject was not only candid about her struggles with weight gain, but opened up about the ways that her mental health issues were impacting her physical health.

"The only thing powerful enough to distract me from darker thoughts is food. Food is my go-to drug that takes my pain away," she said during the episode. "Food is more than just a pleasure. It’s my reason for existing."

She continued, "Food has caused all of the things I hate about my life, but it is the only thing I have ever had to help me feel good and I don’t know where to even begin to change that. Ever since I can remember, food was just a coping thing, I guess. It just made me happy. It still does. Food just makes me happy."

The episode saw Dolly meet with the show's bariatric surgeon Dr. Now, and after the episode, moved to Houston to be closer to the surgeon's office. She ultimately lost 40 pounds on the show and was not approved for the weight-loss procedure.

Jared Bednar suffered facial fractures and a corneal abrasion following the incident but is expected to make a full recovery, according to a statement from the NHL team.

The incident took place during Saturday’s game between theAvalanche and the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

Knights forward Keegan Kolesar was attempting to bank the puck off the side boards but overshot, bouncing off the players on the Avalanche bench and striking Bednar in the side of the head.

The coach retired to the dressing room and did not return to the game. He was reportedly fully alert and conscious while being taken to the hospital, where he underwent a CT scan.

However, he is now set to miss upcoming games while he recovers.

“He will not require surgery at this time and is expected to make a full recovery.

“Avalanche assistant coaches Nolan Pratt and Dave Hakstol will coach the team in Edmonton and Calgary.”

The Golden Knights ultimately beat the Avalanche 3-2 in overtime to take a playoff spot.

"It's certainly a little unnerving," Pratt told reporters after the game. "It's scary when the pucks are flying in there. It happens all the time and unfortunate tonight, so it takes a little second to sort of recalibrate and then get back to it.”

Masters 2026: Brooks Koepka's driver was set to the wrong setting

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Brooks Koepka’s driver was set to the wrong setting.

Yahoo Sports

Admittedly, this gets into the weeds of golf nerdity, but when you’re teeing it up at the Masters, golf nerdity is part of doing business.

So let’s explain:

Koepka uses a Titleist GT3, which allows for different settings. These settings are adjustable depending on what kind of ball flight you want — neutral, fade or draw. It’s a bit more complicated than that, but the gist is you set the club to your preferred setting.

Koepka’s preferred setting is “A1,” or standard. But on the driving range Thursday after Round 1 he realized his driver had been set to B1, which is more “flat.”

“No one noticed it,” he said. “Switching back to A1, which is what we usually had it and just driving it better.”

Per Data Golf, Koepka lost .41 strokes off the tee Thursday, but gained .86 on Friday. Not surprising, he hit seven fairways Thursday compared to nine Friday and his score showed it — 72 in Round 1 vs. 69 in Round 2, which puts him 3-under for the tournament, nine shots back of Rory McIlroy.

While Koepka explained the error Friday, he didn’t make much of a thing of it.

“Ball striking has been really good this week. Putted better today. Short game has been kind of iffy,” he said after his round. “But, yeah, I like the way I'm playing right now. Just need to be a little bit more aggressive.”

Koepka, playing in his first major since leaving LIV Golf, currently sits in a tie for 13th.

Fury dominates Makhmudov in latest comeback and calls out Joshua

LONDON (AP) — Tyson Fury showed little rust in dominating Arslanbek Makhmudov for a unanimous decision victory Saturday and immediately challenged a ringside Anthony Joshua to fight him next.

Associated Press

“Let's give the fight fans what they want,” Fury bellowed after going 12 rounds in his latest comeback.

A long-awaited Fury-Joshua heavyweight showdown would be one of the biggest fights in British boxing history.

Joshua sat ringside and appeared to be using his phone to film portions of the fight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He didn't commit to anything when Fury (35-2-1) yelled into theNetflixmicrophone: “Do you accept my challenge?”

Joshua said, “I'll punch you up,” and “I’m the landlord. You work for me.”

As for Saturday's fight, the self-described “Gypsy King" had a fairly slow start but otherwise dictated the pace with his left jab and in later rounds landed frequent lead uppercuts on Makhmudov (21-3). Two judges scored it 120-108 and the other 119-109.

The 36-year-old Joshua, a former world champion, later told Netflix in an interview: “Contracts will be sent over. You’ll probably see us in the ring.”

He noted he's still “sorting some things out” following the death of two close friends in afatal car accident in Nigeria. Joshua was a passenger in the vehicle.

The 37-year-old Fury, the former two-time heavyweight champion, called it quits shortly afterlosing to Oleksandr Usykin December 2024 for a second time — his only two professional defeats.

“If AJ don't want it, then lets get Usyk in the trilogy,” Fury said at Saturday's post-fight press conference.

At Fury's request, his ring walk was preceded by a tribute tothe late Ricky Hatton, the Manchester native and former world champion who died last year at age 46.

The message “RIP Ricky” was stitched on the back of Fury's shorts.

Benn handles Prograis

Conor Benn earned a 10-round unanimous decision over Regis Prograis to bolster his case for a title shot againstWBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia.

Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) took command in the middle rounds with punishing body shots against 37-year-old Prograis (30-4, 24 KOs), a former two-time world champion at super lightweight (140 lbs).

Saturday's bout was at a catchweight of 150 lbs.

All three judges scored it 98-92 for the 29-year-old Briton, who sustained cuts over both eyes from head clashes.

Mickey Rourke

Mickey Rourkehas reportedly been kicked out of his Los Angeles home. This comes just months after he rejected thousands of dollars that had been raised by fans after learning about his rental struggles.

The actor rejected a fundraiser after allegedly failing to pay nearly $60k rent

Former Mickey Rourke home

An LA court has officially evicted Mickey from the rental property he lived in, according toRadar Online. The 73-year-old was kicked out of the three-bedroom home after the landlord claimed he owed almost $60,000 in unpaid rent. It’s understood that the actor had lived in the house since March 2025.

Previously slamming the residence, which he was supposed to pay more than $5K in monthly rent for, Mickey said it had “rats and mice.”

“[It] was all rotten,” he said, according to Radar Online, also claiming that the landlord “wouldn’t fix anything.”

“I don’t want to live like this,” Mickey went on. “I’m embarrassed about it, and I’m really pissed off about it.”

Nonetheless, in December, the landlord issued Mickey an order tosettle his rent paymentsor move out. When news of this broke, a GoFundMe was set up to support Mickey … buthe rejected the $100,000that was raised from it.

Calling the fundraising page a “scam,” he said he’d rather “stick a gun up my a** and pull the trigger” than use the money.

“If I needed money, I wouldn’t ask for no f*cking charity,” he continued.

Mickey’s eviction from his LA home comes just one year after he waskicked out of CBB UK. He was ejected from the competition by producers after just a few days for repeatedly – and controversially – breaking the rules. As a result, he wasdenied his paycheck, which a representative for the actor later branded “unjust.”

  • The expectant mom says her pregnancy was an "unexpected surprise," adding she and Geyer feel "amazing" about their baby on the way

Jillian Murray and Dean Geyerare going to be parents!

TheCode Blackactress, 41, and theGleealum, 40, are expecting their first baby together, sharing the news exclusively with PEOPLE. The soon-to-be mom tells PEOPLE she found out she was pregnant on the set of her Great American Christmas movie that she was filming in New York.

"For a few days, I had this really intense congestion that came completely out of the blue. I initially thought I was having some kind of allergic reaction to something in the hotel," she tells PEOPLE. "Out of curiosity, I ChatGPT’d it and learned that the surge in pregnancy hormones can cause swelling in the nasal passages."

"That next morning, I took a test before my call time and I was completely stunned," she adds. "Keeping that news to myself while continuing to film was incredibly difficult. It felt surreal walking onto set, knowing something so life-changing, and not being able to share it yet."

Jillian MurrayCredit: Dean Geyer

Although she was away from her husband, Murray, who recently signed an exclusive multi-picture deal with Great American Media, found a special way to share the exciting news with him.

"I knew I couldn’t keep it to myself for long, especially being so far from home and still having half the movie left to film, so I told him that an 'opportunity' had come in for him through my team. I made sure not to say 'movie offer,' but I definitely implied it," she explains. "I had him FaceTime me right before I was mic’d up for my first scene and sent him an email with all the 'details.'"

"He started reading it out loud, completely focused, asking questions like, 'Who’s the director?' and 'Where is it filming?' " she continues. "And then it clicked. He immediately started crying the sweetest, happiest tears and jumping up and down. It was such a special moment."

So far, Murray says she's been "really fortunate" during her pregnancy since she's been feeling "really good" with "no extreme cravings." Her biggest challenge thus far has been getting a good night's rest.

"I’m so used to sleeping on my back, and now I have to stay on my side, which has been an adjustment," she says. "And of course, waking up every couple of hours doesn’t help with the bladder sensitivity, so it’s been a while since I’ve had a full night’s sleep."

Back in February, Murray and Geyer found out the sex of their baby on the way with an intimate reveal at a nature reserve surrounded by different animals, such as birds, squirrels and alligators. She also shares that they've narrowed down their list of potential names and are homing in on the one that feels "most natural."

"We each have our own lists, and we’ve been testing them out by yelling across the house to see which ones feel the most natural," she says. "We’ve narrowed it down to about four names that we keep coming back to. We need to make sure the name sounds good in both my American accent and my husband’s South African accent."

Murray, who has a recurring role onWhen Hope Calls: BrookfieldonGreat American Family, says she and Geyer feel "amazing," but are still in a bit of shock that they are becoming parents. She shares it was an "unexpected surprise" to find out the happy news.

"We had waited a long time to start a family because I honestly didn’t feel ready before, and since we always planned on only having one, I waited until a much later time in life. I also knew that at this stage it might not happen easily or at all, so we didn’t put pressure on it," she says. "We really just felt that it was in God’s hands that whatever was meant to be would be and no pressure either way. I think that mindset has made this experience feel even more special."

"I feel so blessed to work with a network like Great American Family during this next chapter in my life because they prioritize family above all else," Murray adds. "I get to make incredible movies that I’m proud to share with my little one in the future."

“High Potential” season 2 ending explained: Is [SPOILER] dead in the finale?

High Potential season 2 delivered new info on the elusive Roman.

Entertainment Weekly Steve Howey as Wagner and Kaitlin Olson as Morgan in the 'High Potential' season 2 finaleCredit: Disney

Key Points

  • It ends with a major character bleeding out after being shot by a mystery assassin.

  • The season finale also teased a shadowy figure that may or may not be Roman.

High Potentialcontinues to, well, meet its potential.

The ABC hit is among the most popular TV series currently airing, raking in more than 10 million viewers per episode in its second season.Kaitlin Olsonleads the quirky crime drama as Morgan, a crime consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department whose eye for detail and oddball approach to evidence proves to be as useful as it is frustrating.

Season 2 wrapped on April 7 with mysteries new and old, both of which serve to complicate the personal lives of Morgan and her Major Crimes colleagues Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) and Nick Wagner (Steve Howey). The finale, titled "Family Tree," also shed more light on the enigma that is Roman Sinquerra, Morgan's missing ex and the father of her oldest daughter.

Below, we dig into the ending ofHigh Potentialseason 2 — and how it sets up the story to come.

Who killed Vera?

Kaitlin Olson as Morgan in the 'High Potential' season 2 finaleCredit: Disney

The murder at the center ofHigh Potential's season 2 finale involves a celebrity couple, Vera and Frank Hensley (played by Colleen Donovan and Chris Gartin), the hosts of a home renovation TV show à laFixer Upper. Vera is found dead with a head injury by the pool of the Blackwell Hotel. This is the same hotel where Lucia (Susan Kelechi Watson), Karadec's ex-fiancée and current girlfriend, works.

As Morgan and co. deduce throughout the episode, Vera was murdered by a conman named Charles Hale (Billy Brown), who wormed his way into Frank's inner circle to blackmail him for messing around on his wife. (Frank and Vera's brand revolves around their marriage; the last thing they want revealed is that it's not as sunny as advertised.)

Vera stumbled upon Charles installing a recording device in Frank's hotel room, and he delivered a fatal head injury using a stone bookend. She managed to escape the room, but grew disoriented and passed out by the pool.

Was Lucia involved in Vera's death?

Susan Kelechi Watson as Lucia and Daniel Sunjata as Karadec in the 'High Potential' season 2 finaleCredit: Disney/Christine Bartolucci

Well, yes and no. The case's biggest revelation isn't the reveal that Charles is the killer, but rather that Lucia was involved in the plot to blackmail Frank. Morgan grows suspicious of Lucia after seeing her speaking with Charles outside the hotel, angering Karadec, who's blinded by his love for her.

As Lucia later confesses to Karadec, she dated Charles upon moving to New Mexico following their split. He was a conman, but told her he wanted to change, All he needed was a few more "paydays." She got in the habit of using her role at high-end hotels to alert him to potential marks, but broke up with him after he proved he had no intention of going straight.

He tracked her to the Blackwell and threatened her for cooperation, saying he would leave her alone if she helped him just one more time. Lucia alerted him to Frank, then helped him erase the security footage that would implicate him in the crime. She feels awful, though, as she never thought the con would end with a murder.

The Major Crimes team arrests Charles, and a heartbroken Karadec is forced to put cuffs on Lucia, who he asserts will be charged with accessory after the fact and other crimes.

He later apologizes to Morgan for doubting her, and as she comforts him we see some of the sparks that previously flew around the pair begin to sizzle once again.

What's the latest on Roman?

(Left to right) Clancy Brown as Nick Sr., Jennifer Jason Leigh as Willa, Kaitlin Olson as Morgan, and Steve Howey as Nick Wagner in the 'High Potential' season 2 finaleCredit: Disney/Raymond Liu

Mystery has swirled around Roman, the absent father of Morgan's oldest daughter, Ava (Amirah J), since the series' earliest episodes. Morgan previously thought him dead, but has since learned that not only is he alive, but he was working as an FBI informant when he disappeared.

In season 2, we meet Willa Quinn (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a fixer for the rich and powerful with intel on Roman that Morgan and the rest of Major Crimes desperately want.

A solution comes via Wagner, the LAPD captain whose contentious relationship with Morgan evolved into a romantic one throughout the season. His father, Nick Sr. (Clancy Brown), is a powerful politician who's long utilized on Willa's clandestine services. Wagner and Morgan get their hands on a tranche of calls, texts, and emails that incriminate both Willa and Nick Sr., and use that leverage to get the truth.

Willa, however, believes the information will do Morgan more harm than good. "I've tried very hard to keep this from reaching your life," she says, going on to warn that these answers could put all three of Morgan's children in danger. "I'll give you what you want, then we'll see how badly you wanna keep digging."

Willa's intelligence reveals that Roman was apparently working with an FBI agent named Lyla Flynn, who was accused of laundering money, selling intel, and other crimes. Roman, we learn, is suspected of murdering Lyla when she decided to come clean. Security footage appears to show a hooded figure and Roman's car outside her house on the night of her death.

"This was a scandal too big for the FBI," says Wagner, "and Willa helped them bury it."

Morgan, who doesn't believe Roman to be capable of such a crime, is overwhelmed, fearing for the safety of her family. She asks Major Crimes boss Selena Soto (Judy Reyes) if they can stop digging, but Soto says that's no longer an option. They're already in too deep.

What happens at the end ofHigh Potentialseason 2?

As the season 2 finale comes to a close, Morgan attends Ava's art show, featuring a project that incorporates some of Roman's old artwork. It's one of the last connections she has to her father.

Morgan is forced to leave when she gets a call from Wagner. His father put him in contact with an "FBI ghost" who has more information about Roman. He tells her to meet them at a park. but when she arrives, Wagner is bleeding out on a bench. It looks like he's been shot, though we don't know by whom. A teary Morgan calls 911.

Does this mean Wagner is dead? We don't know, butEntertainment Weeklycan confirm that Howey will no longer be a series regular moving forward.

Meanwhile, back at the art show, a shadowy figure is spotted watching Ava from afar. Is this Roman? Or another mysterious figure from his past? That's one heck of a tease.

“I’ve been circling broadcasting for a long time now,” Bird told The Associated Press in a phone interview Wednesday. “Given NBC’s history and legacy and where the WNBA is now, I am excited to be part of it.

"It needed to be the right fit, the right people, the right network."

The NBC broadcasts will also feature aversion of “Roundball Rock”— John Tesh’s iconic theme song that was the soundtrack of the network’s coverage of the WNBA from 1997 until 2002. It had been used on NBA broadcasts on the network from 1990-2002 before being brought back this year when NBC took over broadcasting games again.

NBC Sports has more than 20 games across the regular season, playoffs and WNBA Finals this year.

“Anytime anyone hears it, whether you're a basketball fan or not, it's really recognizable,” Bird said. “Turn the TV on as a spectator or fan on the couch, if that’s the first thing you hear there’s an excitement that comes with it.”

Bird’s rookie season in Seattle in 2002 was NBC’s last with the WNBA until now.

“There is no more accomplished player in the history of the WNBA and arguably in all of women’s sports than Sue Bird,” said Betsy Riley, Senior Vice President and WNBA Coordinating Producer of NBC Sports. “Sue’s knowledge of the game is unmatched and will bring fans closer to the sport they love, both through analysis and storytelling.”

Portions of Bird's features, which will be a behind-the-scenes- look at the league that is celebrating its 30th anniversary this season, will air on TV with the extended versions available digitally.

Bird has hosted podcasts for the past few years and also was on ESPN for six years providing an alt-cast with Diana Taurasi for the women's Final Four and championship games.

“I really enjoy telling stories as it’s something that comes naturally to me,” Bird said. “I cut my teeth on the podcasts I’m involved in — ‘Bird’s Eye View.’ My goal was to tell the stories of these players. Those are the features I’m doing with NBC as well.”

Bird won four WNBA championships in Seattle, where she played her entire 19-year career. She earned 13 All-Star selections and was the league's all-time leader in assists (3,234), starts (580) and minutes played (18,080). Bird was the No. 1 pick by Seattle in 2002 after leading UConn to two national championships in her time at the school.

She was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025. Bird also had a decorated international career, winning five Olympic gold medals.
