The news follows the major streaming success ofHocus Pocus 2in 2022, which reunited the central stars 29 years after the release of director Kenny Ortega's 1993 original, andbroke streaming recordsfor theDisney+platform upon its debut.

Deadline, which first broke the news, reports that there are plans for a theatrical distribution component this time following the sequel's massive success while available exclusively on Disney+. EVP of Production Jessica Virtue will be overseeing the project on behalf of Disney Live Action.

Disney first announced in the summer of 2023 that a third film was in development, withwriter Jen D'Angelo telling EWshortly afterward that she had a lot of ideas for the sequel, including potentially expanding upon the storyline set forth byHannah Waddingham's mother witch in the 2022 sequel.

"We're still in the story phase, we're still working on it. We've been working on some ideas, and it's been fun to dive back into that world, and we have so many directions in which to go and so many new characters to explore," D'Angelo said at the time. "We've only scratched the surface ofHannah Waddingham's mother witch."

When D'Angeloconfirmed news EW broke in early 2022that OG starThora Birch— along with costarsVinessa ShawandOmri Katz, who collectively portrayed the children who resurrected the sinister Sanderson Sisters in 1993 Salem — would not be returning for the second film, she also shared several ideas featuring Birch that could possibly serve as elements inHocus Pocus 3.

"I was so invested in trying to get [Birch as] Dani back into the story. We had a bunch of different versions of that, too, where she was really a part of it," D'Angelorevealed at the time, noting that "there were some versions where she was popping in briefly as a cameo," and another where "she has a whole arsenal of anti-magic" to fight the Sandersons' modern resurrection in the sequel.

Almost a year later, in June 2024, Midlergave another updateduring an interview onThe Jess Cagle Show. The actress said at the time that Disney was "very gingerly and very gently" working on the third film.

DirectorAnne Fletchertook over to helmHocus Pocus 2, which again resurrected Midler, Parker, and Najimy as the Sanderson Sisters, who returned to terrorize a modern-day group of teenage girls that unwittingly brought them back from the dead on Halloween. Thefilm ended on an ambiguous note that teased a potential continuationof the story ahead.

Original starDoug Jonesalso returned for the sequel as thezombified Billy Butcherson, though EW exclusively confirmed that other actors from the first film — includingLarry Bagby, Tobias Jelinek,Katz, Shaw,andBirch— would not reprise their roles in the sequel.

In anexclusive interview with EWforHocus Pocus 2, Midler, Parker, and Najimy shared their thoughts on continuing the series for a third film.

"I'm envious of other actors who have franchises, and I was hoping for a sequel toFirst Wives Club,but we never got that. After 30 years with no sequel toHocus Pocus, I've always been envious of people who get to do their favorite character more than once. The fact that we got to do this finally, after 30 years of promoting the idea, I'm glad we got to do it. I'd love to have a franchise — especially a character I love playing," Midler said at the time.

She added, "If there was a third one, of course I'd sign on, but I don't know how. I can't imagine what the story would be, but I love Winifred, Sarah, Mary, and our relationship. It's good for women. We stick together through hell and high water, but we do cause mayhem, and not many women cause that much mayhem!"

"Kathy had a good idea that the third one should be animated," Parker shared. "That would be cool and a smart idea. It's fun, funny, and could be interesting and innovative, like old-fashioned or new [animation]... Of course I'd be happy to have a conversation [for a third film], it just depends on what Kathy and Bette want!"

Benedictine baseball splits with Cambridge, setting up deciding Game 3

The Benedictine baseball team has been playing at an elite level all seasonas the Cadets reached the Class 4A state quarterfinals under third-year coach Jason Pascual, their deepest run since BC reached the state semifinals in 2022.

The Cadets were at the top of their game once again on Wednesday as they hosted Cambridge in a double header to start the best-of-three series. The BC bats were on fire in the first game as they hit five homers to back senior righty Colvin Proto, who threw a complete game in the victory.

The Cadets got another strong pitching performance in the second game as Mason O'Neilstruck out eight over six innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. But Cambridge battled back from a two-run deficit as Carson Clark hit a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the sixth to tie it, and Cambridge scored the walk off win on a wild-pitch by reliever Kai Hernadez-Gambill that brought Calloway Holmes home with the winning run in a 3-2 victory.

The deciding Game 3 will be played at Benedictine on Thursday, May 7, at 4:30 p.m.

In the first game, Benedictine got off the a red hot start as Omari Burse led off with a single and Noah Harris deposited one over the fence for a two-run dinger. Catcher Mason Diamond followed with a solo shot for back-to-back homers.

In the bottom of the sixth, Diamond belted his second homer and then Kai Hernandez-Gambill followed with a solo shot of his own for the Cadets second back-to-back homers of the night. Ike Ross also had a home run for the Cadets.

The bats cooled in Game 2, but the Cadets played an excellent game.

"I thought it was good baseball," Pascual said. "At the end of the day — this is playoff baseball. We're one of the last eight teams standing and so are they. Those were well played, well pitched games. Colvin (Proto) gave us a great first game on the mound and Mason (O'Neil) pitched well. Back in January, if you had told us that on May 7th Benedictine is going to be playing a Game 3 to go to the Final Four and host it, we would all take. We're in a situation where we just need to pick each other up a little bit here and get back to work tomorrow."

200 years of sacrifice: Rochester firefighters who died in the line of duty

In the Rochester Fire Department’s history that dates back more than two centuries, more than 65 firefighters have died in the line of duty. Some were killed battling fires — crushed by collapsing walls or chimneys, or falling from ladders. Others died in crashes while responding to emergencies. Several were electrocuted, and others suffered fatal heart attacks while working at fire scenes.

A number of firefighters later died from injuries or illnesses linked to their service. Below are notable line-of-duty deaths of Rochester firefighters, compiled by the Rochester Fire Department and the Democrat and Chronicle.

Some deaths occurred before the city established a professional fire department in the mid-1800s, though organized volunteer firefighting in Rochester dates back to May 1826.

Rochester firefighting line-of-duty deaths

• Dec. 21, 1827 — Firefighter Thomas Rathburn, 25, was killed when a chimney collapsed at Peck’s Paper Mill on South Water Street.

• Aug. 26, 1840 — Firefighters George Benjamin and John Easton were killed while battling a fire in the Curtis Building on Main Street. A wall collapsed as they descended a ladder, burying both men.

• Nov. 21, 1857 — Firefighters Patrick Heavey, 25, and William Cleator, 20, were killed when a wall collapsed as they operated a hose line from a rooftop on East Main Street.

• May 4, 1867 — Firefighters John Pike, 51; Harvey Forscheler, 37; and Joseph Wernette, 25, were killed when a ceiling collapsed during a fire at Washington Hall on East Main Street, burying them in burning debris.

• Feb. 21, 1886 — Fire Chief Law Siddons Gibson died of pneumonia 11 days after being drenched in freezing conditions while fighting a fire on Chatham Street. He served as chief for 13 years, though not consecutively.

• Jan. 23, 1893 — Firefighters Joseph Byrne, 27, and Frederick Sackett, 26, were crushed by a collapsing wall while fighting a fire on Stone Street. Byrne died at the scene; Sackett died six weeks later.

• Dec. 17, 1894 — Firefighter Louis Rice, 37, was killed when two fire trucks collided as they responded to a call. He was thrown from his rig.

• Oct. 2, 1896 — Harry Austin, of the Protectives Volunteer Company, died after falling from a ladder while assisting at a fire at the Lamberton Building at Saint Paul and Andrews streets.

• July 2, 1899 — Lt. Frank Klueh, 35, was electrocuted while responding to a transformer fire on Liberty Street.

• Jan. 8, 1901 — Firefighters Edward Murphy, 32; John Slattery, 31; and George Long, 27, died from respiratory failure after exposure to nitric acid fumes during a chemical fire at Kodak Park.

• Jan. 28, 1902 — Lt. William Boon Jr., 28, was killed when a wall collapsed while he fought a fire at Rochester Screw Works on Caledonia Avenue.

• Oct. 12, 1902 — Assistant Chief William Boon Sr. died of a heart attack while responding to a church fire. His son, Lt. Boon Jr., had died 10 months earlier in a separate fire.

• Nov. 9, 1902 — Firefighter James O’Leary was killed when his truck overturned en route to a warehouse fire.

• April 27, 1905 — Lt. Theodore Fitzgerald died of smoke inhalation while searching for a fire in the basement of a State Street building. He had successfully entered once but died during a second attempt.

• Oct. 12, 1906 — Firefighter John Burke died from pneumonia contracted while fighting the Great Sibley Fire in February 1904.

• Nov. 9, 1907 — Firefighters John O’Brien, 36, and George Peartree Sr., 46, died after their truck crashed while responding to a call.

• Nov. 1, 1913 — Firefighter George Major, 32, was killed after being thrown from a fire engine in a crash.

• Dec. 6, 1913 — Firefighter Thomas Carmody, 47, died of a heart attack while responding to a fire.

• July 8, 1915 — Lt. Joseph Neidert, 32, was electrocuted while attempting to move a downed power line to protect nearby children.

• June 18, 1916 — Firefighter Alfred Gracey, 50, was crushed between a fire truck and firehouse doors while responding to a call.

• Feb. 26, 1919 — Firefighter Charles Byron, 53, suffered a fatal head injury after being thrown from a truck in a collision with a streetcar.

• Oct. 31, 1922 — Firefighters Thomas Sullivan and Edward Gommenginger died after their engine lost a tire and crashed into a bridge. Sullivan died the same day; Gommenginger died two days later.

• April 17, 1924 — Capt. Abraham Price, 50, died of a heart attack while fighting a fire.

• July 4, 1926 — Firefighter Patrick Donnelly, 35, was crushed beneath a fire truck responding to a call.

• May 4, 1930 — Firefighter Frederick Longmore died from pneumonia after rescuing two people from a fire the year before.

• Aug. 9, 1930 — Firefighter John Mahon, 35, died after being thrown from a ladder when a hose buckled during a fire.

• Jan. 15, 1940 — Firefighter Henry Holburn died five days after being thrown from a fire engine into a bridge abutment.

The look ultimately served as a full-circle tribute to the outfit she was wearing when she was first discovered by a modeling agent at a Brooklyn subway station in 2024.

Reportedly, under the creative direction of Matthieu Blazy, the ensemble was designed to align with the theme “Fashion Is Art” by elevating an ordinary, everyday garment into a meticulously crafted piece of high-fashion art.

Merritt Island beach volleyball claims regional title

Merritt Island beach volleyball faced a familiar foe on Tuesday, May 5, in the Class 2A, Region 2 final in New Smyrna Beach, the reigning state runner-up.

Tuesday was the second meeting of the season with No. 2 seed New Smyrna Beach winning the regular season meeting 4-1 on March 11.

In front of its home fans, No. 1 seed Merritt Island flipped the result with a 3-2 victory to claim the regional title and punch its ticket to Tallahassee for the state semifinals.

“Super proud of them. They worked really hard,” Merritt Island head coach Angie Patrick said. “Just win their last game at home is just pretty sweet.”

The Barracudas won the first match of the duel 21-11, 21-18. On center court, senior Delaney Petit and junior Reece Loggins evened things up with a 3-set win.

Merritt Island carried that momentum, winning the next two matches to secure the regional title. Mustangs junior Sadie McClellan and sophomore Gena Walters won in straight sets 21-19, 21-15.

On center court, juniors Bella Becker and Amber Ives clinched the win with a 21-19, 21-13 sweep.

“The first 10 minutes or so, I was a little concerned because we seemed hesitant and nervous. I think we started to find our groove and then I felt better because they got this now,” Patrick said. “They were feeling more confident and moving better. I think just them turning that dial, flipping that switch and realizing what was on the line. Just seeing them go out and compete was a great thing.”

Petit/Loggins battled back to earn Merritt Island’s first win of the match. The No. 2 pair dropped the first set 16-21 before rallying to win 21-17, 15-13.

“I think just to get through each pass and talk to each other about hitting shots, where to go really helped us,” Petit said.

Merritt Island dropped three of its first seven matches of the season. Since then, the Mustangs have rattled off 13 consecutive wins to advance to the state semifinals.

They’ve achieved that with Petit as the lone senior on the squad.

“Since the beginning, we always came out here with 110 percent effort and always pushed to be successful,” Petit said.

Merritt Island last played in Tallahassee in 2024 when it was among the final 16 teams in the state. For the first time since the sport expanded to three classes, it’s among the last four teams standing in Class 2A.

“We went to state a couple years ago and lost in a region semifinal last year, which was very tough,” Petit said. “Coming out, being very strong and compete very hard against a team we lost earlier in the season to was very exciting. Everyone cheering and being excited for our team helped us a lot.”

The Mustangs compete in the Class 2A state semifinals on Friday, May 8, at Florida State University. A victory would propel them to the championship match on Saturday, May 9.

“Same thing that happened (Tuesday),” Patrick said. “We all got to come out ready and strong and not nervous, back on our heels and just have confidence. More than anything, I just want to enjoy this ride with them. I want them to enjoy it and know this is going to be a blast.”

Officials Capture 4 Stray Dogs From the Pack of 6 Canines That Attacked a California Woman

Four canines from a group of six stray dogs that attacked a woman in Stockton, Calif., have been officially captured.

According toABC 10and9 News, the attack took place on Thursday, April 23. Dorrie Reyez was walking near her home in the Weston Ranch neighborhood of Stockton when six unaccompanied dogs approached her and started attacking.Reyez filmed the dogs with her cellphone as she screamed for help from her son, Ronnie Reyez, before the canines started jumping on her.

Ronnie told ABC10 his mother sustained significant injuries and received "at least 150 to 200 lacerations and punctures all over her body," including her arms, legs, neck, and face.

"They got her pretty bad," he said. "This could have been a lot worse." A Good Samaritan who witnessed the scene unfold helped Dorrie escape the dogs.

ABC 10 also spoke to Stockton residents who expressed fear for the local children who play in the area.

"I'm hoping they catch the dogs, because there are kids out here too that ride their bicycles," explained one resident. "There are kids and moms with strollers; you just never know."

On May 1, one of the dogs was captured with a humane trap and transported to a local animal shelter. A couple of days later, a second was found. On May 4, two more were captured by officials near the scene of the attack.

Stockton Police Department (SPD) confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement that four of the dogs have been captured, and officials are searching for the remaining dogs.

"Coordinated daily efforts have continued to safely locate and capture the remaining dogs as part of an active and ongoing investigation," the department shared.

Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee said in a statement to ABC 10, "Public safety is the priority in addressing the stray dog concerns."

Lee also noted that this is a "community issue," highlighting that "pet overpopulation and roaming animals don't happen without a lack of responsible ownership."

Officials confirmed that the city is expanding its spay-and-neuter services and "expects residents to do their part" to be responsible pet owners.
