When he takes the mound Friday night, Kevin Gausman will live out the dream of every MLB free agent. After years of struggling to find his footing in the majors, Gausman became the best version of himself at age 30, just before hitting the free-agent market.

The Toronto Blue Jays, desperately in need of a front-line ace after losing Robbie Ray to the market, needed to find that one player to take them from playoff hopeful to World Series contender.

It took a few years, but Gausman accomplished just that. Despite a few bumps in the road here and there, and some concern over his age, Gausman proved to be the perfect signing for the Blue Jays back in 2022. He not only lived up to his deal, but legitimized the team as a contender for other talented free agents.

So, it's only fitting that Gausman will take the mound with a World Series championship in the balance. With the Blue Jays up 3-2, Gausman will get the call at home Friday night in front of what will almost certainly be a deafening Toronto crowd. With a win, Gausman can etch himself into Blue Jays lore as one of the greatest signings the team ever made.

A win is far from guaranteed, however. The Los Angeles Dodgers will counter with their ace, second-year starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The 27-year-old is on one heck of a postseason run, tossing complete games in each of his last two outings.

It will take everything Gausman — and the Blue Jays' lineup — has to match Yamamoto on Friday. But if they can stop his dominant streak, a massive celebration and months of being known as the reigning World Series champions await.

When Trey Yesavage returned to the Blue Jays' clubhouse after pitching the biggest game of his life, a ceramic, pear-shaped, $100 bottle of tequila was waiting in his locker.

"I don't know what it is, but he deserved it," Toronto closer Jeff Hoffman said. "But is he even old enough to drink it?"

Yes, by 458 days in the U.S. and by 1,189 in Ontario, Canada. The Dodgers' visiting clubhouse attendants, who left the congratulatory gift in the rookie's locker, likely knew as much. That well-earned jug of Mandala Reposado will accompany Yesavage on the Jays' plane, where the fruits of his labor will surely be shared with many of his teammates. It will be a long flight home but a happy one. That's because the Toronto Blue Jays, after a resounding 6-1 victory in World Series Game 5, are just a single win away from a championship.

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps said Friday "we are trying our hardest" to settle the federal antitrust lawsuit with the two teams suing the racing series in the most expansive comments yet from the defendants.

Phelps read from a statement that ran over six minutes and took no questions on the litigation between 23XI Racing, owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, and Bob Jenkins-owned Front Row Motorsports.

Both sides recently participated in two days of mediation and didn't come to a resolution, but NASCAR had been hoping that continued conversations would lead to a settlement it could announce ahead of Sunday's championship-deciding season finale.

"NASCAR is fully aligned with our race team partners who have submitted declarations hoping to end this litigation," Phelps said at Phoenix Raceway in the annual state of the sport news conference.

"We are trying our hardest. I am trying my hardest both as a fan as well as the commissioner of this sport that I've loved since I was 5 years old. While two out of the 15 teams may not share that view and seem set on an unfortunate court battle, I hope that we can all agree that our racing is as good as it has ever been and we care about how we serve our fans, especially as we look forward to capping off our season by celebrating new champions across all of our national series."

NASCAR this weekend will crown its champions in the Truck Series, Xfinity Series and finally the season-ending Cup Series finale on Sunday. Hamlin is one of four drivers eligible for the winner-take-all title.

The lawsuit was filed a year ago by 23XI Racing, co-owned by NBA Hall of Famer Jordan and three-time Daytona 500 winner Hamlin. Front Row Racing, a much smaller team, aligned with 23XI and they were the only two organizations out of 15 to not sign extensions last year on new charter agreements.

The new charter agreements were presented to the teams at the start of the 2024 playoffs with a deadline for them to sign. It followed over two years of tense negotiations over the charters, which are at the heart of NASCAR's business model as they guarantee revenue and access to weekly races.

23XI and Front Row likely will go out of business without them and are racing this season unchartered, which comes with significantly reduced prize money.

Other teams have called for a settlement to move forward, but mediation sessions and private negotiations have not worked. The trial is scheduled for Dec. 1.

U.S. District Judge Kenneth Bell this week dismissed NASCAR's countersuit against Curtis Polk, the longtime business manager for Jordan and one of 23XI's owners.

NASCAR has routinely refused to discuss the lawsuit but Phelps made an exception Friday with his prepared statement.

"This is not an antitrust case. The 2025 charter agreement is an improvement on the 2016 framework," Phelp said as he read off enhancements that include "over $3 billion in guaranteed payments to the teams, enterprise value that is roughly $1.5 billion now to the race teams, guaranteed starting positions each week that allow teams to sell sponsorship on the best billboards in sports, the Next Gen car, and charters guaranteed for 14 years until at least 2039, plus an obligation to negotiate in good faith beyond that.

"The bottom line here is NASCAR is committed to charters."

Phelps also defended the Florida-based France family who founded the sport in 1948, financially supports it and has grown it into the top motorsports series in the United States.

"The France family started NASCAR in 1948 using their own resources, grit and ingenuity. They have taken countless personal and financial risks, investing billions of dollars and untold hours into growing this sport to create opportunity for teams to race in front of fans for nearly eight decades," Phelps said. "We are proud of what we built for fans together with the race teams, especially since the charters were introduced. ... We'll continue to defend and preserve it.

"Make no mistake, the lawsuit puts this at risk."

Ever since he first picked up a tennis racket, João Fonseca has shown a penchant for power – even if it came with mixed results.

"I was the kind of kid that destroyed the ball," says Fonseca. "Sometimes, it would go into the fence; sometimes, it would go straight to the floor; and then, sometimes, we're doing a winner."

That approach – fearless, furious and unrestrained – has stayed with the Brazilian into his professional career, and today, his ripping forehand is one of the most breathtaking sights in men's tennis.

Few players can match the 19-year-old Fonseca when it comes to raw power, particularly on the forehand wing. This not-so-subtle, not-so-secret weapon has guided him to two ATP Tour titles this year, including in the Swiss city of Basel last week.

There, Fonseca thumped 29 winners to see off Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final, while his average forehand speed was clocked at 81 miles per hour. For comparison, top players usually average around 75.

"I think my coach was really the first one that said: 'Keep with this aggression,'" Fonseca tells CNN Sports about his all-out approach. "'Keep doing this, but at the same time, let's work with being more solid.'

"During these last years, I understood that you can't hit the ball hard every time … Sometimes, it's a stupid idea, of course, but sometimes, it's good to be aggressive, to be courageous and have confidence in your shots."

Lifting the title in Basel saw Fonseca become the third-youngest ATP 500 winner since the format was introduced in 2009, as well as the tournament's youngest winner since Jim Courier in 1989.

Still a teenager, Fonseca's potential is huge, his freakish power likely to become more of a threat as he develops and refines his game. To some, he is destined to join Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner – by far and away the standout players in men's tennis this year – at the very top of the game.

"The Brazilian Blaster (Fonseca) is a generational talent as I said 2 years ago and will be right there someday with the Italian Flamethrower (Sinner) and Spanish Magician (Alcaraz)," Rick Macci, the former coach to Serena Williams, wrote on X recently.

Those players, Macci added, will "create a new big three" to replace Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Davidovich Fokina spoke along the same lines during his runner-up speech in Basel, telling Fonseca that he is "for sure going to be the next Nole (Djokovic) to beat Carlos and Jannik."

After winning last year's Next Gen ATP Finals title – a tournament featuring the world's best players under 20 – Fonseca turned heads at the Australian Open in January with a straight-sets victory over ninth seed Andrey Rublev.

He followed that up by winning the Argentina Open a month later, becoming the second-youngest South American to win an ATP title in the Open Era.

But Fonseca's progress hasn't been exponential. He failed to progress past the third round of a grand slam this year, perhaps a surprise after the enormous promise he showed at the start of the season.

The victory in Basel, however, reaffirmed his status as one of the most explosive talents in the game, with Fonseca climbing 18 spots up the rankings to No. 28. That puts him well on track to fulfill his self-ascribed objectives for next year.

"I think one of my goals is to be a seed, top 32 (at a grand slam)," says Fonseca. "It's my personal goal. I'm working a lot to do it … let's see how it goes."

To get to this level, Fonseca had to spend his formative years building a bond with tennis. As a young player, the game would make him feel restless, and he often found himself chasing big, haymaking shots on the court. He was even more impatient off it, unable to watch a full match without losing interest.

That changed around 2019, when Fonseca sat absorbed as Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in a Wimbledon final lasting four hours and 57 minutes – the longest final in the tournament's history.

A self-proclaimed Federer superfan, that match hurt Fonseca. As he started to enjoy tennis as a spectator, he would often watch the "Big 3" play out match after memorable match on the sport's biggest stages, but it was the Swiss star who captivated him the most.

"He's my idol," Fonseca confesses. Which goes some way to explaining why he suddenly found himself a sweaty, nervous wreck before meeting Federer for the first time in September.

"We had a nice chat, about 10 minutes, and we talked a little bit about life, tour, how it is to live in Brazil and be far from home," says Fonseca, adding: "He's a super nice guy. You see these amazing players, these legends, as untouchable (and think): this guy is different. But no, he's just a human being like us, super cool.

"It was a very important moment; it's going to be in my mind for my whole life."

It's likely that the two might cross paths again, particularly given that Fonseca is sponsored by On – the sportswear company in which Federer has invested and helped with product development. The Brazilian was only 16 when he was signed by On and earmarked as a star in the making, joining a roster that includes six-time grand slam winner Iga Świątek and world No. 7 Ben Shelton.

Several years earlier, Fonseca had made the decision to focus his sporting endeavors solely on tennis, not long after a soccer injury had left him sidelined for months.

Like most kids growing up in Rio de Janeiro, soccer was, and still is, one of his great loves, even though his playing days have long since passed.

"I was a good level," says Fonseca. "I'm a lefty leg, I had some skills, but nothing serious. I wouldn't be professional or whatever. Fortunately, I stayed with tennis."

After reaching the quarterfinals of last year's Rio Open aged 17, Fonseca decided to forego his college eligibility – he was holding a place at the University of Virginia – and turn professional.

Since then, his march up the world rankings has been steady, quickly earning him an army of dedicated fans. Fonseca's matches are some of the loudest on tour, and regardless of whether he's playing in Brazil or further afield, yellow-and-green-clad spectators are guaranteed whenever he's on a tennis court.

It's taken time, Fonseca admits, to grow accustomed to playing in front of such raucous crowds.

"At the beginning, I was super nervous," he says. "I needed to win, and there are people watching me, there are people cheering for me. The culture of Brazil is super loud, a lot of people supporting, I'll say a little bit because of football.

"I got used a lot to the crowd. Nowadays, I love playing with the crowd. I love them supporting me. I love that sometimes I'm in a bad situation in the match and they're still supporting me, still cheering and motivating me.

"I was more like a shy guy," he adds, "and now I'm loving it."

Playing in loud matches at big tournaments is likely to be a mainstay of Fonseca's career. He is slowly accumulating more experience against the world's best players but hasn't yet faced Djokovic – he's hopeful of doing so before the Serb, now 38, retires – nor has he played either Alcaraz or Sinner.

Those kinds of matches might become a regular occurrence should Fonseca, armed with that ferocious forehand, continue his march up the rankings. For now, he is watching closely as two players just a few years his senior rule over men's tennis, sharing the past eight grand slams equally between them.

One day, Fonseca might be in a position to challenge their duopoly.

"What they're doing is amazing," he says of Alcaraz and Sinner. "They're winning every tournament that they play.

"They motivate all the other players to put more work in day by day, and try to be with them, try to win more tournaments, try to win matches, be more consistent. Hopefully, in the future, I will be with them, playing and competing in finals. But one step at a time, and let's put in the work."

The rematch of last season's AFC championship game is here.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who have that look again as a Super Bowl team, will face the Buffalo Bills in Upstate New York on Sunday for Week 9's game of the week.

Siciliano summed it up for the Buffalo faithful:

"I know a lot of Bills fans that will go, 'Eh, OK, cool. Like it was worth the ride on Sunday. I had a good time. I'd rather have them win than lose, certainly. And maybe this factors when it comes to where this game is going to be played when they meet again [in the playoffs], but it's going to ring real hollow. What stands out to me is that the Bills still have trouble stopping the run."

Indeed, Buffalo has work to do against ground attacks. The Bills enter Week 9 giving up 150.3 yards per game, which is 31st in the league with only Cincinnati faring worse.

The trade deadline, which is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, matters for the Bills, and this matchup could further highlight what they need.

"I definitely think this game for the Bills in particular, they're sitting there and they've been kicking around wide receiver options on the trade market trying to figure out can we find maybe a low end No. 1 who is a legit No. 1 like a Jakobi Meyers maybe from the Raiders," Robinson said.

"And now with Ed Oliver, that injury, now they're sitting there and going, do we need to go out and look for a defensive piece where we can plug somebody into that spot because that's such a massive loss for them?"

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - OCTOBER 13: Bijan Robinson #7 of the Atlanta Falcons rushes during the first quarter of the NFL 2025 game between Buffalo Bills and Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on October 13, 2025 in Atlanta, United States. (Photo by Todd Kirkland/Getty Images) (Todd Kirkland via Getty Images)What's at stake for Chiefs?

Losing to Buffalo in the regular season isn't new for KC. The Chiefs have lost the past four regular-season matchups against the Bills. It's almost a cruel tease to Bills Mafa considering the Chiefs in the Mahomes era have owned Buffalo in the postseason — when it matters. The four January victories have come in wide varieties from convincing to heartbreaking from a Bills fan perspective.

So what's the big gain here for KC?

Mostly, it's potential for KC to improve from its current wild-card slot and keep pushing for what seems to be its birthright, the AFC West crown. The Chiefs trail the 6-2 Denver Broncos by a game and are tied with the Los Angeles Chargers at 5-3.

But it's also a potential for the Chiefs to continue their show of force after a meh start to the season.

"Right now, Kansas City's offense is humming. It's humming 415 yards a game since Week 4, which is just absurd," Siciliano said.

The Vegas oddsmakers, including BetMGM, are certainly buying into KC (which is likely to trigger more moans over Chiefs fatigue. Sorry, folks). Fawkes polled five of them and they all had the Chiefs as their Super Bowl favorite now.

"All of them now had the Chiefs atop their power ratings, several of them for the first time this season because a lot of them had the Bills before the season.

"A lot of them had the Ravens, some had the Eagles. This was the first time where it was unanimous. It was all the Chiefs. … So the Chiefs are high in Vegas' power ratings. Patrick Mahomes is the MVP favorite. The Chiefs are the Super Bowl Bowl favorite. It kind of seems like all is back to right in the NFL world."

FORT COLLINS, Colo (AP) — President Donald Trump's efforts to help the U.S. coal industry at home are being undermined by falling sales abroad amid his trade war with China, new government reports show.

China has stopped importing U.S. coal, accounting for most of a 14% decline in U.S. coal exports so far this year, according to analysts and the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Trump's meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping this week suggests trade progress. But whether it will include the U.S. coal industry is still uncertain.

"It's hard to tell whether that's just going to maintain the status quo or if that's going to be an increase in exports of coal and soybeans to China," coal analyst Seth Feaster with the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis said Friday.

Trump has been easing up on regulations and opening up mining on federal lands. The result has been to "keep our lights on, our economy strong, and America Energy Dominant," Interior Department spokesperson Charlotte Taylor said in an e-mailed statement Friday.

The administration has also reduced royalty rates for coal extracted from federal lands and in September pledged $625 million to bolster coal power generation, including by recommissioning or modernizing old coal plants amid growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence and data centers.

Recent government coal lease sales in Montana, Wyoming and Utah, however, have failed to draw bids deemed acceptable by the Interior Department.

So far this year, U.S. coal production is up about 6%, due not to Trump policies but higher natural gas prices, Feaster said.

Meanwhile, coal exports fell 14% from January through September compared to the same time last year, according to an EIA report released Oct. 7.

The drop followed an additional Chinese tariff of 15% on U.S. coal in February and a 34% reciprocal Chinese tariff on imports from the U.S. in April, the EIA said in a report issued Friday.

The U.S. exports about one-fifth of the coal it produces. Most goes to India, the Netherlands, Japan, Brazil and South Korea.

China is not a top destination, taking in only about one-tenth of U.S. coal exports. But it has had an outsized effect on overall U.S. coal exports by halting all coal from the U.S. since April, said Andy Blumenfeld, a coal analyst at McCloskey by OPIS.

Almost three-quarters of U.S. coal exported to China last year was metallurgical coal used in steelmaking. The rest was thermal coal burned in power plants to produce electricity, according to Blumenfeld.

Nearly all U.S. metallurgical coal is mined in Appalachia, while the bulk of U.S. thermal coal comes from massive, open-pit mines in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana.

Appalachia would therefore benefit most from a resumption of U.S. coal exports to China, noted Blumenfeld by email.

"There is optimism," Blumenfeld wrote. "But there is little documentation to back that up right now."

Most coal headed for China last year went through Baltimore, with lesser amounts via the Norfolk, Virginia, area and Gulf of Mexico, according to Blumenfeld.

Relatively little thermal coal from the Western U.S. is exported due to the cost of hauling it by rail to the West Coast, where there has also been political resistance to building port facilities to export more coal.

Kirkland Signature Bath Tissue -

Price: $24.99

There's no denying that Kirkland Signature Bath Tissue is a good deal at $1.75 per 100 square feet. And while it has over 16,000 reviews on the Costco website, over 900 of them are one and two-star reviews. Unfortunately, this means that some shoppers strongly dislike this product. Complaints include paper that doesn't tear along the perforation, fuzzy lint-like particles that release everywhere and sheets that disintegrate when wet.

A 12-pack of Kirkland Signature Columbian Cold Brew Coffee at Costco for $19.99 is a good deal if you compare to other brands. Unfortunately, for a few shoppers, the taste of this brew leaves a lot to be desired. One reviewer described it as tasting "metallic and burnt" while another went further and wrote that it tastes like a cup of old tobacco spit.

Price: $9.99

Shoppers can save $3.70 by buying Kirkland Signature Ultra-Shine Dish Soap instead of Dawn, but some shoppers say it isn't worth it. The main complaint is the scent of the soap. Some reviews deem it to be awful, horrible or the worst smell ever. Another problem is that the scent lingers. One shopper even said that the soap left a residue on her griddle that she can't wash off and now everything she cooks on it tastes like soap.

Kirkland Signature Protein Bars are sold at Costco in a 20-pack for $26.49, which is $1.33 per bar. That's a real savings compared to name brands, which can cost almost twice as much per bar. However, some reviewers find these protein snacks to be impalatable — especially the chocolate chip cookie dough flavor. They describe them as dry, chalky and too sweet with a hard-to-chew, taffy-like consistency.

(Reuters) -A momentous week in the technology sector made it clear there is no sign the boom in building artificial intelligence infrastructure is slowing — despite the bubble talk.

Nvidia, whose processors are the AI revolution's backbone, became the first company to surpass $5 trillion in market value. Microsoft and OpenAI inked a deal enhancing the ChatGPT maker's fundraising ability and OpenAI promptly started laying groundwork for an initial public offering that could value the company at $1 trillion.

Amazon said it would cut 14,000 corporate jobs, just days before its cloud unit posted its strongest growth in nearly three years.

These developments, along with numerous earnings calls and interviews with executives, make clear that AI has cemented itself as the single biggest catalyst for global corporate investment and the engine of the market rally, even as some question the sustainability of both.

Soaring revenue at Microsoft, Alphabet and other technology giants was expected. But more than 100 non-tech global companies noted data centers on quarterly calls this week, including Honeywell, turbine maker GE Vernova, and heavy equipment maker Caterpillar.

Sales in Caterpillar's division that supplies data centers jumped 31% in its most recent quarter. "We're definitely really excited about the prime power opportunity with data centers," CEO Joseph Creed said this week.

"The AI supply chain now spans power, industrials and cooling technology, and investors are looking at the entire ecosystem rather than just core tech," said Ayako Yoshioka, portfolio manager at Wealth Enhancement Group.

Goldman Sachs estimates global AI-related infrastructure spending could reach $3 trillion to $4 trillion by 2030. Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and Alphabet are expected to spend roughly $350 billion combined this year.

AI investment is propping up global trade, with about 60% of U.S. data-center capex spent on imported IT equipment, according to Oxford Economics, much of it semiconductors from Taiwan, South Korea and Vietnam.

At least two dozen companies representing more than $21 trillion in combined market value reported quarterly earnings or spoke with Reuters about AI in recent days. Many, including Procter & Gamble and Boliden, noted that the hoped-for productivity gains, though uneven, are beginning to show.

"We strongly believe the future contribution of artificial intelligence within R&D, within developing innovation, will steadily increase," Schindler CEO Paolo Compagna told Reuters, though he said AI's impact is yet to be seen. The Swiss lift and escalator maker raised its annual margin forecast last week.

Year-over-year revenue growth in the U.S. tech sector is up more than 15%, outpacing all other sectors, according to LSEG data.

Apple said it was significantly increasing AI investment and Amazon projected capital spending of $125 billion in 2025.

Since ChatGPT's debut in 2022, global equity values have climbed 46%, or $46 trillion. One-third of that gain has come from AI-linked companies, according to Bespoke Investment Group.

Analysts warn of a quickening replacement cycle for servers, accelerators and chips as each new generation delivers exponential performance gains. The useful life of AI chips is shrinking to five years or less, forcing companies to "write down assets faster and replace them sooner," said UBS semiconductor analyst Tim Arcuri.

The surge in AI-related spending has widened the gap between investment and returns, with a Reuters analysis showing that sales-to-capex ratios at major tech firms have fallen sharply as outlays on chips and data centers grow faster than revenue. Capital expenditures represent a larger chunk of cash generated by operating activities for some companies, causing some investor concern.

"If progress hasn't been made toward monetization within three years, the market will start asking hard questions," said Sumali Sanyal, senior portfolio manager at investment firm Xponance.

Microsoft reported a record $35 billion in capex in its most recent quarter and projected higher spending, prompting Bernstein analyst Mark Moerdler to ask whether the company was spending into a bubble. Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood responded that AI-related demand still outpaces Microsoft's spending. "I thought we were going to catch up. We are not," she said.

Some companies are financing AI projects with debt. Oracle's $18 billion bond sale last month was one of the largest ever for a tech company, and it looks set to be surpassed by an up to $30 billion bond sale from Meta Platforms. News of its largest ever bond sale knocked Meta's shares down 11% on Thursday.

Still, many economists say the AI cycle is far from exhausted. Goldman estimates AI investment is currently less than 1% of U.S. GDP, far below peaks of 2% to 5% seen during the electricity and dot-com booms.

"We are in the early innings ... and the pace of AI innovation is the fastest we have seen in decades," said Nick Evans, portfolio manager at Polar Capital Technology Trust.

The San Francisco 49ers may find a cure for their ailing running game when they meet the New York Giants on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J.

The 49ers (5-3) rank last in the NFL with 3.4 yards per carry this season, while the Giants (2-6) are giving up a league-high 5.7 yards per carry. San Francisco has scored only three rushing touchdowns; New York has allowed 10.

As 49ers star Christian McCaffrey was being held to a season-low 25 yards on the ground in last weekend's 26-15 loss at Houston, the Giants were getting run over by Saquon Barkley (150 rushing yards) and backup Tank Bigsby (104 rushing yards) in a 38-20 loss at Philadelphia.

The Giants know exactly what McCaffrey can do as a two-time NFL leader in scrimmage yards (2019, 2023).

"He's one of the better players in the league in his position. He's a mismatch in the passing game, a mismatch in the running game," Giants coach Brian Daboll said. "They run a wide variety of run schemes. He can run them all. They put him on a wide variety of routes, receiver routes that receivers would run. He can do pretty much everything. He's a very valuable piece for their offense. He's extremely good."

Defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches said the Giants are focusing on doing "the simple things better."

"That's what it comes down to," he said. "The fundamentals, the filling our gaps, getting off blocks -- the simple things. And once you do those things, you can take care and eliminate those big runs or those explosive runs and things of that nature."

New York's own running game took a devastating blow in the loss to the Eagles, with rookie Cam Skattebo knocked out for the season with a dislocated ankle, fractured fibula and ruptured deltoid ligament.

Tyrone Tracy Jr., who gained 1,123 yards from scrimmage as a rookie last season and began this year as the starter, will resume RB1 duties against the 49ers.

Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart is 2-0 at home since taking over as the starter for the Giants, with wins against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4 and the Eagles in Week 6.

As for San Francisco's QB situation, Brock Purdy has not played since Week 4 with a toe injury that he originally sustained in the season opener. On Friday, he was deemed questionable for Sunday's game but coach Kyle Shanahan said Mac Jones will make his seventh start of the season either way.

"He got more reps this week, but we weren't going to commit to (giving him all of the starter reps in practice), like we did last time," Shanahan said. "I think it's easing him back more than last time."

Jones is 4-2 as the starter in Purdy's absence. Jones is 0-5 in his career against NFC East opponents.

San Francisco receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee) will miss his fifth straight game. Others who will sit out against the Giants are center Jake Brendel (hamstring) and defensive ends Yetur Gross-Matos (knee/hamstring) and Bryce Huff (hamstring).

In addition, five other 49ers join Purdy as questionable. They are guard Ben Bartch (ankle), offensive tackle Spencer Burford (knee), defensive tackles Jordan Elliott (ankle) and Sam Okuayinonu (ankle) and linebacker Dee Winters (knee).

The Giants ruled out a trio of cornerbacks: Paulson Adebo (knee), Cor'Dale Flott (concussion) and Art Green (hamstring). A fourth corner, Rico Payton (groin), is questionable along with safety Jevon Holland (knee).

New York will also be without defensive lineman Chauncey Golston (neck), while tight end Daniel Bellinger (neck) and tackle Jermaine Eluemunor (pectoral) are doubtful.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Quarterback Brock Purdy will miss his fifth straight start for the San Francisco 49ers with a toe injury, but he has made enough progress that he could be available in a backup role on Sunday against the New York Giants.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Purdy is still not "fully healthy" but has made enough progress to get some time with the starters in practice this week. Mac Jones got the bulk of the snaps with the starters and will get the nod once again this week.

Shanahan said the Niners are easing Purdy back in after he rushed back once from the injury already. Purdy hurt the toe in the season opener and missed the next two games. He returned in Week 4 and struggled in a loss to Jacksonville when he re-injured the toe.

"He is never going to get too up or too down. But, just speaking for him, I know he is frustrated," Shanahan said of Purdy. "Anytime you've got stuff that you haven't had before that lingers, Brock is more frustrated than anyone that he can't be out there. So, he has talked to a lot of people who have had this, so I think a lot of people have warned him that this is the case, so he understands it. So, it's not just totally shocking him. But, I think anytime you have something that doesn't go away, it's frustrating."

The Niners ruled out four players for the game, with receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee) missing his third straight game, defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos (hamstring) missing his fourth straight, and defensive end Bryce Huff and center Jake Brendel sitting out their second straight games with hamstring injuries.

Shanahan said defensive lineman Keion White is set to make his debut for the team after being acquired this week in a trade with New England, and that defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell could be elevated from the practice squad for Sunday's game after being signed this week.

Linebacker Dee Winters (knee), defensive end Sam Okuayinonu (ankle) and defensive tackle Jordan Elliott (personal) are all listed as questionable.

San Francisco listed offensive linemen Spencer Burford (knee) and Ben Bartch (ankle) as questionable and could activate at least one from injured reserve Saturday, with Shanahan saying Burford is closer to making a return.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Inter Miami and Nashville SC must be getting tired of each other.

They'll meet in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series in the MLS Cup Playoffs – their third matchup in as many weeks – on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tenn.

It's been a one-sided affair, to say the least.

Lionel Messi had a hat trick with an assist in a 5-2 win on the final day of the regular season in Nashville on Oct. 18, then scored two goals with an assist in a 3-1 win in Game 1 at Inter Miami's Chase Stadium on Oct. 24.

Still, it's just a 1-0 series lead for Inter Miami, where a close-out win on the road will help them move onto the second round of the playoffs.

Game 3, if necessary, would be on Nov. 8.

"We know despite having had two positive results against them in the last two weekends, we have to understand that Nashville has put us in many difficult moments," Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said of Nashville before practice on Friday, Oct 31. "We've dealt with it well, but they'll surely put us in a difficult moment again. We have to be prepared for that."

Inter Miami has not lost in its last 10 matches against Nashville, but expects them to play with the same intensity they had in the first half of their Decision Day match to end the season.

Nashville led 2-1 at halftime at home with goals from Jacob Shaffelburg and Sam Surridge, a 2025 MVP finalist this season like Messi. However, Messi scored two of Inter Miami's four unanswered goals in the second half of that matchup.

During Game 1, Messi and Inter Miami took a 3-0 lead before Nashville's Hany Mukhtar scored a free kick in the closing minutes to ruin a clean sheet.

While Inter Miami may feel in command, their historic first-round playoff loss to Atlanta United last season still lingers this postseason.

Inter Miami, the 2024 Supporters' Shield winners, won Game 1 against Atlanta before dropping the next two matches to end their season short of MLS Cup title expectations.

"We're doing well as a group. We're on a good run. But we can't get overconfident about our opponents because anything can happen," said Tadeo Allende, who scored in Game 1 of the series for Inter Miami.

Inter Miami left back Jordi Alba returned to practice after missing a session Tuesday due to a finger injury, Mascherano said.

Midfielder Rodrigo De Paul was given an excused absence after Game 1 to see his girlfriend, Argentine singer Tini Stoessel, perform in concert last weekend in Argentina. He returned to practice on Monday, and practiced all week.

"Rodrigo traveled over the weekend because we gave them Saturday and Sunday off. He had to travel to Argentina for personal reasons, and we gave him permission to do so. On Monday, he was here training with the rest of the team," Mascherano said of De Paul.

"I'm one of those coaches who, when I give players time off, I don't ask them what they're going to do … their private life is their private life. I have no reason to get involved in their private life. I'll also tell you that we knew he had to travel for some personal matters he had to resolve in Argentina, and he took advantage of the weekend to do so."
