Week 9 in the NFL proved that the action is only picking up as the campaign reaches midseason and the trade deadline approaches.

One week after a historically lopsided slate, Sunday proved exponentially more scintillating thanks to upsets, close calls, injuries and plenty of other notable developments. And the shifting isn't likely to stop there, as Tuesday's trade deadline could prompt more movement in the next 36 hours or so, even if the swaps are of the more minor variety seen in the last month or so.

Here are the biggest winners and losers from Week 9 in the NFL:

NFL Week 9 winnersPittsburgh Steelers' defense

The league's highest-paid defense has been sharply criticized this season for being static and ineffective, particularly in consecutive losses in the last two weeks. Sunday, however, marked a clear breakthrough. In a 27-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts, Pittsburgh nabbed six takeaways from an offense that only had four turnovers in its previous eight games. Good fortune surely played into that sharp contrast, but so too did strong execution. Running back Jonathan Taylor was held to a season-low 45 yards on 14 carries by a unit that made his erasure its top priority. From there, the Colts struggled to replicate their previous magic, as edge rushers Alex Highsmith (two sacks) and T.J. Watt (one sack) feasted against an Indianapolis front that was out of sorts in obvious passing downs. Pittsburgh still has to prove it can exist somewhere closer to this performance extreme rather than the other it in which it resided recently, but conjuring an answer for the league's most efficient attack made quite the statement.

Colston Loveland

When the Chicago Bears tight end hauled in his first career touchdown to give his team a third-quarter lead against the Cincinnati Bengals, it seemed like a nice contribution from a player who otherwise had largely been an afterthought in his rookie campaign. On this day, though, he would be nothing short of essential to the Bears, especially with starter Cole Kmet sidelined by a second-quarter concussion. With Chicago staring down a crushing collapse after giving up 15 points in the final two minutes, Loveland hauled in a Caleb Williams dart down the seam, bounced off one would-be tackler and spun past another before racing for a go-ahead, 58-yard score. It was enough to give Loveland more receiving yards on the day (118) than he had all year before Sunday (116). More importantly, he put Chicago right in the thick of a condensed NFC North race on a day when the organization seemed to be teetering on the verge of disaster. It might be another year before the No. 10 overall pick becomes a staple of the offense, but after this performance, it will be hard for coach Ben Johnson to overlook what dimensions the field-stretching threat adds to the aerial attack.

Rico Dowdle

For most running backs, tallying a franchise-record 473 yards from scrimmage over a two-game span would lead to a featured role for the rest of the season. For Dowdle, it yielded a split with typical starter Chuba Hubbard. Dave Canales acknowledged last week, however, that the rugged ball carrier gave the offense something a little extra, and Dowdle did just that in powering a 16-13 win over the Green Bay Packers. Not only did he notch his first game with two rushing touchdowns, his 130 yards on 25 carries kept Carolina chugging on a windy day during which Bryce Young passed for just 102 yards. The only party capable of pushing back on him was the officiating crew, who flagged Dowdle for his, uh, evocative touchdown celebration. At 5-3, the Panthers are in the mix to end a seven-year playoff drought. That's thanks in no small part to Dowdle, who seems due for a much bigger payday this offseason than the one he received in March with a $2.75 million deal.

Brian Flores

The Minnesota Vikings' performance behind center has sparked the most headlines, but there's been slippage across the board – including from Flores' vaunted defense. Sunday's 27-24 win over the Detroit Lions served as a needed return to form on several fronts. A maligned defensive front bottled up Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, allowing the dynamic backfield duo to post just 65 yards on 20 carries. Detangling the Lions' intricate offense allowed the Vikings to tee off on Jared Goff, who took five sacks as the offense converted just five of 17 third-down attempts. That helped enable Minnesota to play its own brand of complementary football, with a solid ground game (142 yards on 29 carries) aiding J.J. McCarthy in the quarterback's return from an ankle injury. It's going to be difficult for this group to reach a level anywhere close to the lofty highs it discovered last season, but this was an encouraging showing against a team that long had Flores and the Vikings' number during the Ben Johnson years.

Buffalo Bills' playoff-seeding outlook

There's still that little matter of holding onto the AFC East crown for a sixth consecutive season, which might not prove so easy given the New England Patriots' one-game lead and highly favorable schedule down the stretch. But Buffalo's 28-21 win over the Kansas City Chiefs held importance beyond the symbolic value of vanquishing the foe that has repeatedly blocked the franchise's Super Bowl path. Of course, the Bills have been here before, having now won the last five regular-season matchups with no postseason breakthrough to follow. But Sean McDermott's crew now possesses a two-game advantage on Kansas City in the loss column, along with the all-important head-to-head tiebreaker. If the defense can thwart surging passing attacks the way it halted Patrick Mahomes (who was pressured on 52.6% of his dropbacks, according to Next Gen Stats) and Co., then maybe Buffalo is the AFC team to be feared rather than Kansas City.

Cam Little

The second-year kicker already set himself apart from many of his peers by booting a 70-yard field goal in preseason. Now, however, he officially stands above everyone else in NFL history with a record-setting 68-yard field goal against the Las Vegas Raiders. Little hasn't been the picture of reliability, with three misses – two field-goal attempts and a point-after try – in the last two games. With range like this, though, he's a legitimate asset for an offense that still hasn't fully found its stride. Yet with the Dallas Cowboys' Brandon Aubrey already having drilled two kicks of at least 64 yards in regular-season games, it might not be long before Little faces a legitimate challenge for his new mark.

Matthew Stafford

Good weekend to be a Southern California sports fan. One day after his old pal Clayton Kershaw secured another World Series title, Stafford made quick work of the New Orleans Saints' undermanned secondary with four touchdown throws – all coming against the blitz – in the Los Angeles Rams' 34-10 romp. Two of his scoring strikes went to Davante Adams, while Puka Nacua caught another. The quarterback also averted disaster with Nacua's rib injury, with coach Sean McVay saying after the game that the receiver could have returned if he had been needed. The MVP race is a flavor-of-the-week matter right now with no clear front-runner, but Stafford is keeping himself at the forefront of the conversation.

NFL Week 9 losersWashington Commanders

Pinpointing blame for player injuries is typically a fruitless endeavor in a sport that can swing multiple parties' fortunes in an instant. In the case of the Commanders and Jayden Daniels' gruesome elbow injury in Sunday night's 38-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, however, it's fair game to question coach Dan Quinn's culpability. Daniels was hurt on a second-down scramble with his team trailing 31-7 with less than eight minutes remaining. Even by the rosiest outlooks, that comeback isn't materializing. Worse yet, Quinn said after the game that Washington's performance was "unacceptable" and that the team "missed the opportunity by a mile." Why, then, leave it all on the shoulders of Daniels to try to claw all the way back? The quarterback already has an acknowledged issue with protecting himself that dates back to his Heisman Trophy-winning year at LSU, during which he would routinely subject himself to massive hits when taking off as a runner. It's difficult for an organization that has embraced an all-in mentality to pull back, especially when the season has gone as haywire as this 3-6 campaign has for the Commanders. But now the near future looks murky for both Daniels and Washington, and Quinn will have to answer for an unwillingness to cut his losses.

The bottom line was bad enough, with Green Bay being dealt another stunning defeat as well as the loss of breakout star Tucker Kraft, who the team fears suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, per multiple reports. But the manner in which the Packers arrived at their last-second defeat compounded the agony. Once again, a team that couldn't hang with the NFL's elite last season can't seem to handle its most straightforward matchups this year. From Jordan Love's several questionable throws on Sunday – one of which resulted in an interception – to kicker Brandon McManus missing another field goal, the Packers have plenty of baked-in volatility. But Matt LaFleur is ultimately responsible for a unit that too often amounts to less than the sum of its parts, with the coach bemoaning a 1-of-5 red-zone performance Sunday. On a day when the Lions also faltered, Green Bay should have seized the opportunity to build some separation in the NFC North. Instead, the outing helped reinforce that the division is fully up for grabs in the final two months.

Bengals' defense

For a minute, it appeared as though Joe Flacco's career performance and Cincinnati's offensive resilience might be enough to cover for another dreadful day from the team's defense. But it took just that same minute – less, even – for the Bengals to squander a stunning rally that briefly looked capable of saving the franchise's season. Yes, the tackling and coverage on Loveland's game-winning touchdown were nothing short of shameful. But pinning the outcome on that one play would be reducing the group's problems to a single misstep, and that in no way captures the full extent of the futility here. The Bears trampled the Bengals for 283 yards, the bulk of it coming from hard-charging Kyle Monangai in the seventh-round rookie's first start. When Chicago wasn't simply pushing Cincinnati aside, however, it was literally playing "hot potato," which was the name of the trick play on which Caleb Williams scored a receiving touchdown. And the defense's known vulnerability over the middle continued to be exploited, as opposing tight ends now have 12 touchdowns against the unit this season. One week after begging for a leader to emerge, coach Zac Taylor said he felt "sick to lose like that." In reality, though, his team has been floundering in this fashion for quite a while. It just hasn't seemed this dramatic until now.

Los Angeles Chargers' protection plan

Any confidence the Bolts had in their ability to safeguard Justin Herbert was short-lived. In his second game back from a high-ankle sprain that sidelined him for three weeks, left tackle Joe Alt was carted off in the second quarter of the Chargers' 27-20 win over the Tennessee Titans. With Alt out – and starting right tackle Bobby Hart also leaving due to a groin injury – Herbert took a season-high six sacks while also throwing a pick-six in the face of a blitz. Even with star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons inactive on the day, the Titans' pedestrian collection of pass rushers applied consistent heat, with Dre'Mont Jones and Jihad Ward each notching four hits. If Alt misses another significant stretch of time, the Chargers will be hard-pressed to stave off the likes of the Steelers, Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles, all of whom are ahead in the team's next four contests.

Parker Romo

Gillette Stadium just isn't the kicker's scene. Two-plus months after Romo lost a competition to rookie Andy Borregales for the New England Patriots' job, Romo missed an extra point that proved decisive in the Atlanta Falcons' 24-23 loss. Romo enjoyed a nice debut in stepping in for Younghoe Koo, converting all five field-goal attempts in a Week 2 win over the Vikings. But he's missed three field goals since then, and it's difficult for a team with this little margin for error to operate like this.

San Francisco 49ers' injury luck

Weathering personnel losses has become a way of life for San Francisco for a year-plus, but the 49ers' injury hits have reached a level of absurdity. The latest blow: First-round rookie defensive end Mykel Williams is feared to have torn his anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday's 34-24 win over the New York Giants. For a unit that's already without its superstars in defensive end Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner, a breaking point feels imminent despite the impressive work of coordinator Robert Saleh. Keion White's addition last week should add a bit of depth and upside along the defensive front, but San Francisco can't be reasonably expected to forge ahead in the playoff chase unless it brings aboard another piece before the trade deadline.

Texas climbs to No. 15, Oklahoma rises to No. 11 and Georgia Tech drops to No. 12 in a topsy-turvy USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank 1-136.

The Longhorns have clearly figured something out during a four-game winning streak bookended by high-profile wins against the Sooners and Vanderbilt. Arch Manning has played his best football during this stretch, capped by 328 yards and three touchdowns against the Commodores.

Oklahoma goes up seven spots after beating Tennessee to notch one of the best road wins by any team in the Power Four. The win keeps the Sooners alive in the College Football Playoff race in advance of games against Alabama, Missouri and LSU.

The Yellow Jackets drop six spots after losing to North Carolina State. Tech remains the top-ranked team in the ACC, ahead of No. 13 Louisville, No. 17 Miami, No. 20 Virginia and No. 25 Pittsburgh.

Down six after losing in overtime to SMU, the Hurricanes are one of a few Power Four contenders dropping in this week's re-rank. The Commodores fall to No. 16, the No. 24 Volunteers are down 10 spots, Cincinnati drops to No. 28 after getting blown out by Utah and Houston is down to No. 30 after a narrow loss to Arizona State.

There were no changes to the top five of No. 1 Indiana, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Georgia. Rounding out the top 10 are No. 6 Oregon, No. 7 Mississippi, No. 8 Brigham Young, No. 9 Texas Tech and No. 10 Notre Dame.

*EW's BINGE* podcast is here to make it clear: You think you know *RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 2*, but you really have no idea.

This week, drag superstars Alaska and Detox reunite for a special *AS2* recap in which they spill scalding tea on highlights from the fan-favorite season — including when Detox nearly changed her mind about her decision to eliminate Alyssa Edwards from the competition.

"I wanted to change it when I picked Alyssa. I just didn't do it… I knew it was Roxxxy's time to go, but I still picked Alyssa. The whole time I was like, 'God, I should've just done it,'" Detox recalls of the episode 7 moment in which she chose to eliminate Edwards over her friend, who'd appeared in the bottom across four consecutive weeks leading up to that point. "I had already put [Alyssa's lipstick] under my sleeve, and I was going to ask one of the PAs to be like, 'I can't do this, I've gotta change my lipstick,' but I didn't know how to do that. I didn't know how to navigate that. I was like, f--- it, it's already done."

Edwards' elimination was one of many juicy scenes in what fans often cite as the best season in* RuPaul's Drag Race *herstory. It marked the first time the queens, rather than the panel of judges, were tasked with eliminating each other from the competition. Alaska, who went on to win *AS2*, also tells EW how she dealt with the intense back-and-forth between viewers — including over the headline-making moment where Alaska also saved Roxxxy, seemingly because of a borrow rhinestoned top.

"You can't go around and be like, 'Yeah, I regret it, and I'm so sorry,' you have to be like, 'No, I stand behind my decision, I'd do it again,' and deal with it. In general, the fans had been really nice to me for a long time — inordinately nice to me — and all of a sudden they were really mean to me. It made me realize first of all, [the internet is] not real, it's a fiction," Alaska says. "It also gave me a lot of compassion for the majority of queens who go on *Drag Race* who don't have a very nice relationship with the fandom, who get treated like s--- by the fandom. It gave me compassion. I understand that now."

She also fondly recalls the moment Andrews lent her the infamous white top, as was in-line with the queen's character throughout the season: "I had a white shirt that I was going to wear and she had the identical white shirt, except hers was rhinestoned, so I was like, oh, work.... she's lovely and she was giving s--- to everybody and helping everybody the whole ass time!"

BenDeLaCreme eliminated herself from* RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 3* because that's what? The gag of the season. Bedtime BD herself joins the latest episode of *EW's BINGE* podcast alongside fellow *AS3* legend Kennedy Davenport to discuss the aftermath of the most shocking exit in the show's herstory.

In the episode (listen above), DeLa reveals that the "meandering path" to the decision she made to eliminate herself from the competition wasn't something she'd planned from the beginning of the competition, but rather a seemingly cosmic alignment of queen energy. For starters, she got the Wite-Out she used to write her name on one of the lipsticks from her *AS3* cast mate Thorgy Thor, and the concept to write someone else's name over an existing stick sprung from a running joke she started with eventual season winner Trixie Mattel that would've involved writing "RuPaul" or "Michelle Visage" on the tube as a prank.

"There was this moment where I was like, ok, I've really established myself, people do see me as a frontrunner, I've broken some records, if I decide I'm not going to play by these rules, no one is going to be able to say that she gave up because she couldn't do it," DeLa remembers, while Davenport confirms that other moments organically "just led up" to the big, unplanned reveal. "It was kind of this perfect thing where, in this moment, I kind of was fed up with the conflict generating with that moment with Morgan [McMichaels], I saw that I'd actually already done what I needed to do, and these little moments clicked into place.... it felt like fate."

She says she was shocked that production didn't stop her from making the choice, and she's thankful they allowed it to play out as she wished. Still, she's unsure if she would've pulled the stunt the next time she won a lip-sync if she'd lost the duel against BeBe Zahara Benet.

"Who knows? Probably not. It was a thing that was relevant to the moment. Maybe I would've, but I don't dwell on pasts that don't exist," she finishes.

Davenport insists it was a "real moment" for her, too: "I was boo-hoo crying over there, honey," she says. "You know when it's your time to go home and that was really my time to go home. Had she not went home, I do believe I probably would've gone home that episode!"

Monique Heart, Naomi Smalls, and Manila Luzon were so excellent and deliciously chaotic on *RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 4* that they burned the house down — almost literally, as the queens reveal in an exclusive interview on EW's BINGE podcast.

Fans will recall the season opening with an epic lip-sync between challenge winners Heart and Trinity The Tuck, which ended as the former threw her wig into the air — though it never returned to earth, as it got stuck in the rafters of the studio. It's a move "which almost set the building on fire, ya'll forget that fact!" Heart recalls with a laugh, adding that she decided to pull the accidental stunt when she felt her "lace slipping" during the high-energy performance. "They said, 'Get it! It's synthetic!'"

The show then briefly cut to a stage hand reaching a giant stick toward the ceiling to get the hairpiece down: "Baby, it was like a giant rod that they unscrewed and got up on a ladder," Heart remembers. "He [tried] two or three times and couldn't get it. He got it and everybody cheered!"

Another moment that had a less joyous impact on the fandom, however, was the moment Smalls — after her first challenge win — decided to eliminate Luzon, a front-running contender, from the competition. Smalls still receives vicious comments from the fans to this day, but, like the icon she is, she stands by her decision.

"We worked together on *Jersey Justice*, Manila and I, and we had a really good time doing it.... I thought we both kind of killed it. We talked about it off-camera, all that jazz, and she was like, 'I think you're going to win,' [but] when we went to the judges [they said], 'Manila ate you,' and she was like, 'Yeah, I did kind of eat you.' If we're not going to have a trustworthy back-and-forth, we're clearly not friends," Smalls says. "Maybe that was also a factor of going into making the decision for myself and not really looking at track record."

Later, Luzon joins the podcast for a solo interview to discuss the big moment.

"Miss Naomi Smalls, I knew she would send me home. I knew if I was ever in the bottom, they'd send me home. I'm not stupid!" Luzon says, stressing that she felt a "huge target" on her back after she slayed both the* Snatch Game* *of Love* challenge and the Lady Bunny roast — a move that put her on "a different level" than the other queens. "I kind of threw away the singing challenge even though everyone knows I have 10 years' worth of music. I kind of kept it simple, tried to play it a little bit cool, and when it was time for me to go, I went."

She goes on to say that there are no hard feelings against Smalls, whom has since starred in Luzon's "Go Fish" music video that was released on the day of the shocking elimination back in 2019.

"I thought that people had figured out that this was just a game, but people did take it seriously and they sent her a lot of hate, and I felt really bad. I felt a little grossed out. This is not what the show is about," she says, adding that she'd happily perform with Smalls on tour if given the opportunity. "Ultimately, we all put ourselves out there when we go on the show, and we all know what can happen if you do something crazy on the show. It will stick with you forever! That's probably one of the reasons why I didn't send home Valentina, because I don't need to get hate from Valentina fans!"

The Atlanta Braves have just been told a nightmarish scenario. With the off-season underway, the Braves must address the shortstop spot before it's too late. There are two ways this could go. Ideally, they'd secure Ha-Seong Kim on a new deal before he tests the market. However, given the warnings they've received about Kim this weekend, it's tough to predict what direction the Braves will take. They could still target Bo Bichette, but that move's starting to look unlikely now.

Sportscaster David O'Brien said that Ha-Seong Kim is almost certain to decline his $16M player option for 2026. That means the Atlanta Braves will need to come up with a strong long-term offer to keep him.

He's the best shortstop option out there. Considering that Bo Bichette's defensive struggles are likely pushing him to another position. All the while, Atlanta's need at shortstop is getting hard to ignore.

In the next campaign, they can't rely on the rest of the lineup to consistently cover for Nick Allen's weak bat.

At 27, Bo Bichette will likely be chasing a contract close to $200 million. There's no doubt he can hit, yet injuries this season and ongoing defensive struggles have held him back. As Eric Cole from HTHB also noted, when you factor in the price tag and his defensive issues, signing Bichette could turn out to be a costly mistake for the Braves.

Atlanta's shortstops haven't provided much offense lately, but defense is still key up the middle. That's where Bichette falls short; his game is built more around hitting than fielding at this point.

And when it comes to Kim, the Braves have a very short window to strike a deal before other teams jump in. It's all on the general manager and president of baseball operations for the Atlanta Braves, Alex Anthopoulos.

He should be able to put together an offer tempting enough to keep Kim from testing free agency. If the Braves can't land Ha-Seong Kim after all, it'll be interesting to see how they pivot and fill that void. More so, if Bo Bichette somehow decides to stay in Toronto.

Is Bo Bichette's chapter in Toronto coming to an end?

Bo Bichette's longtime teammate and close friend, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., shared his thoughts on Bichette after Game 7 of the World Series. "I would love to finish my career playing with him, but it's free agency."

Guerrero said in the early hours of Sunday morning. Right after the Blue Jays' heartbreaking extra-innings Game 7 loss to the Dodgers in the World Series. "He has got to go do his thing and do what he has to do to go get his money." Vladdy added.

For the record, many teams across MLB are expected to chase Bo Bichette this offseason. His situation has quickly become one of the biggest storylines for the Blue Jays' front office. And it won't come without tough decisions and criticism.

Bichette is the standout among the Blue Jays' upcoming free agents, a group that also includes Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer. After hitting a clutch three-run homer in Game 7, nearly sealing a World Series win, Bichette's about to secure a massive payday.

Toronto could be in the mix, too. "I've said I want to be here from the beginning. I want to be here, but I just played Game 7." Bo Bichette said after Saturday's tough Game 7 loss.

Every story needs a good villain. And for the beginning of *The Vampire Diaries*, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) was that villain, the big bad brother who followed Stefan (Paul Wesley) home to Mystic Falls to make his life — or eternity — miserable. (And then there was Damon's whole plan to free the series' next villain from a tomb that she wasn't actually in, but we'll get to that.)

In the early days of the series, *Vampire Diaries* co-creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec worked to discover Damon's voice, finding inspiration from within. "It's just that inner voice that is so snarky, all the things you wanna say out loud but you can't," Williamson says during episode 1 of *EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries*.

The result was an arrogant (and glib) Salvatore who delivered a handful of enigmatic one-liners in season 1, including Plec's personal favorite: Standing on a roof, Damon refuses to tell Stefan his evil master plan. When asked what he's up to, he responds, "That's for me to know and you to dot dot dot." And it turns out, that line was Plec and Williamson's way of answering a network note... or 10.

"For the first three or four episodes, any time anyone read a script at the network they were like, 'Yes, but what's Damon's drive? What does Damon want?' And we were like, 'Oh my God, he just wants to be an a--hole,'" Plec says with a laugh.

So, the writers worked it into the script, with Stefan serving as the voice of the network, constantly asking the same question: What does Damon want? Until, finally, Damon tells him that it's "for me to know and you to dot dot dot." (Get it?)

But as season 1 continued, fans started to fall for Damon's evil ways a bit too much, so much so that Williamson and Plec felt the need to reset some things at the start of season 2. "We can't have a lovable villain," says Williamson. "That's great and that's a fan-favorite character, but that doesn't bring you real storytelling and real stakes."

Plec adds, "We had this magnificent villain who could do no wrong in the eyes of the audience and we thought, 'Let's give him something really wrong that is unforgivable so we can buy ourselves another year of Damon as the villain and Stefan as the hero.'" With that in mind, they had Damon snap Jeremy's (Steven R. McQueen) neck at the end of the season 2 premiere. But the fan response was not what Plec and Williamson had intended.

"They [were like], 'Poor Damon, poor Damon, he's so misunderstood! He just loves Elena so much,'" Plec recalls. "We were aghast. We were like, 'What have we wrought? We have basically accidentally created the poster couple for toxic masculinity.' The women loved him and we couldn't understand it at all. That was a moment."

Thankfully, Damon wasn't the show's only villain by that point. As Williamson puts it, "Every time one of the villains turned nice, we brought in a new one." And that's just what happened at the end of season 1, when, in one of the series' biggest twists, Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev) shows up, kisses Damon, and then waltzes into Elena's house and removes Uncle John's (David Anders) fingers.

The Vampire Diaries

Nina Dobrev as Katherine Pierce on 'The Vampire Diaries.'. The CW

"That set the standard for *Vampire Diaries*," Plec says of the season 1 finale twist. "That finale set the standard of: We always have to fight to get to as close to this amazing awesome twist and cliffhanger ending as we possibly can. We can never let our audience down with a finale. We put so much pressure on ourselves for eight years to make sure that we never failed a finale. There were some that were better than others, but we took our finales seriously."

And to think, it wasn't always the plan for Dobrev to play both characters. "It didn't occur to us originally that Nina should play Elena and Katherine," Plec says of what would become the Petrova doppelgangers. "In the books, they called it a striking resemblance. I remember Italia Ricci, who had tested for Elena early on, comes up to us at Comic-Con after the show gets picked up she's like, 'I am putting myself in front of you to say I would like to play Katherine Pierce.'"

But by that point, Dobrev's photo had already been used for the 1864 snapshot of the curly-haired doppelganger, and a few episodes later, she'd take on both roles and nothing in Mystic Falls would ever be the same.

Katherine Pierce's season 1 arrival in Mystic Falls changed everything for *The Vampire Diaries*… and for actress Nina Dobrev. Suddenly, Dobrev went from playing Katherine occasionally in flashbacks to pulling full-time double duty on the series as present-day Katherine and, of course, Elena.

"The first episode was just a couple flashbacks, and then they introduced her more and more, so I got to figure her out over the first season, and then season 2, once she was back and in the flesh and she was in a lot more of the episodes, it was crazy schedule-wise shooting both of the roles," Dobrev says in episode 2 of *EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries*.

But Katherine's arrival didn't just make things crazy behind the scenes. Within the world of the show, the doppelgänger instantly created chaos, particularly for Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena. Katherine's goal was simple: She wanted the happy couple to split.

Stefan and Elena tried to fool her at first, but when that didn't work, Jenna (Sara Canning) ended up in the hospital, and Stefan and Elena were forced to realize that Katherine always gets her way. The result was one of the series' most devastating breakup scenes, which Wesley still remembers vividly.

The Vampire Diaries

Paul Wesley on 'The Vampire Diaries'. The CW

"I remember doing at least four [takes] that were, like, pretty good," Wesley says on the podcast. "I also was dealing with a couple things in my personal life, so I didn't really want to go to dark places because I was trying to keep my head above water in real life, frankly. And so [director John] Behring kept pushing me. Maybe he sensed I was going through something and so he really wanted that on screen, and I remember just getting a little bit angry at him, even though it was his job. I would do the same as a director. When you're creating film or television, the whole point of it is to be honest and pure."

Ultimately, Wesley says he went to his "personal place" and channeled real-life emotion for the heartbreaking scene. "That crying, that whole breakup was [me] dealing with my own stuff, essentially, on screen. And then I remember after we shot it I was a little relieved, but then also a little bit angry that I had to deal with that and then I had to go home and deal with that," Wesley says. "But at the end of the day, it's on screen, it works so great for the scene, and I would do it again in a heartbeat."

Audiences love to root for a bad boy, but it's one thing when the bad boy is a troubled teen from the wrong side of the tracks and something else entirely when he's a 1,000-year-old vampire responsible for the deaths of countless people. And yet, when Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) visited Caroline Forbes (Candice King) on her birthday during *The Vampire Diaries*' third season, a new ship was born.

"Candice had chemistry with everybody, and Caroline, as a result, had chemistry with everybody," *Vampire Diaries* executive producer Julie Plec says in episode 3 of *EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries*. But the writers had no idea when they were crafting that scene — in which Klaus goes to heal Caroline after he told a sired Tyler (Michael Trevino) to bite her — that it would become something greater. "I think that [scene] birthed the chemistry, as opposed to the other way around," Plec says.

From that point on, the Klaroline ship was a fan favorite, and although it led to many great moments on the series, it's one thing Plec admits would never fly today. "It's so toxic," she says. "That little romantic relationship would never get through a writers' room today because it's just unbelievably f---ed up, but boy was it good."

Vampire Diaries

Candice King and Joseph Morgan on 'The Vampire Diaries'. the cw

Speaking of ships, during the podcast Plec also reveals the one relationship that she plotted for five years before realizing it wasn't going to happen. Specifically talking about the season 3 episode "The Reckoning," in which Matt (Zach Roerig) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) share some poolside scenes — and Bonnie saves Matt from drowning — Plec says those scenes gave her an idea. "I shipped Bonnie and Matt from that day, and in my head, the end of the series would be a flash-forward that Bonnie and Matt had gotten together and had a family," she says.

For years, Plec kept that idea in her back pocket. "I held onto that in my head until we were breaking the series finale and broke an entire version of the series finale that had that, that Bonnie found her happiness with Matt Donovan and they had everything they'd ever wanted, a family, a human family, and beautiful Bennett-Donovan children running around," she says. "And then we decided not to go into actual flash-forwards in the future. We jumped into peace instead." And just like that, Plec's idea died.

For *The Vampire Diaries*, season 4 was a time of transition. Elena (Nina Dobrev) was becoming a vampire, she was switching Salvatores, and the series was trying to launch a spin-off about the Original family.

Sitting down to talk about the season on episode 4 of *EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries*, executive producers Julie Plec and Caroline Dries reflect on the season's most "controversial" decision: having Elena be sired to Damon (Ian Somerhalder). "I don't know that we could pull that off today," Dries says. "I don't remember exactly why we did it, but when you have 22, 23 episodes of something, you just have to complicate it. You want people to be happy for a second, but then you just have to keep knotting it up over and over and over until it's super-complicated."

Plec also remembers the decision being a bit about timing. Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena broke up in episode 6, and the writers knew that by episode 15, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) would be dead and Elena's emotions would be off. "We wanted Damon and Elena to have something that mattered on an emotional level before her humanity was off," Plec says. "She can't just break up with Stefan and hop into bed with Damon, even though part of America would like that very much. That just doesn't feel right, vampire or no vampire."

As Plec says, the sire bond was a way of explaining that Elena's emotions were heightened, even more so than a normal vampire's would've been. In the aftermath of that decision, however, Plec admits, "We then had to do a lot of work to untangle the fact that they had sex while she was technically under the effects of some supernatural link."

Later in the podcast, when talking about the *Originals* backdoor pilot, Plec reveals that Charles Michael Davis had some competition for the role of Marcel. "One of the other people who read opposite Charles for that part was Pedro Pascal, who I loved," she says. As for why they didn't ultimately cast him, Plec says, "I was obsessed with him, but he was just on the older side." (With that episode airing in 2013, had Pascal landed the part, he might not have been able to play fan favorite Oberyn Martell on *Game of Thrones*, so perhaps things worked out.)

Plus, *The Originals* found Davis, someone who, as Plec says, "just had that swagger. You needed somebody with that kind of swagger to operate and breathe in the same place as Klaus [Joseph Morgan]."

The Dodgers' 2025 World Series win has set off a wave of celebration and plenty of debate. With their championship parade in Los Angeles still to come, fans are gearing up for more unforgettable moments. But it's not all cheers across the baseball world. Reportedly, many are once again calling for a salary cap, arguing that the Dodgers essentially bought their championship.

Moreover, accusations of MLB favoritism toward L.A. haven't quieted down either. And now, just to stir things up even more, MLB's latest tribute to the Dodgers, featuring Shohei Ohtani's dog decoy, has managed to hit a nerve at exactly the wrong time.

"Decoy went b̶a̶c̶k̶-̶t̶o̶-̶b̶a̶c̶k̶ bark-to-bark!" MLB's post via X shows how Decoy is also a 2x World Series champion.

Anything wrong in the post? Apparently not, but for a few fans, it's enough for a meltdown!!!

Well, allegations against MLB for bias towards the Dodgers are nothing new. Fans have long accused MLB of showing favoritism toward the Dodgers. It's almost become a running theme: every time Los Angeles makes a deep postseason run or gets a close call, critics claim the league is tilting the field in their favor. And there are a few reasons behind it…

The league often puts Dodgers players front and center in promotional materials, commercials, and international campaigns, especially stars like Ohtani and Betts. Hence, to some, it feels like MLB is actively pushing the Dodgers as the face of baseball.

It is undeniable that the Dodgers enjoy one of the biggest and most loyal fan bases globally. Especially in the US and Japan, the Dodgers steer the maximum marketing for MLB. But this time, MLB's tribute to Ohtani's dog is what has fans wondering what's next.

For fans, it does not suit MLB to post a tribute to a player's pet on its official handle.

Make no mistake…. Decoy is more than just a pet in the Dodgers' world. A quick look at MLB.com shows entire articles dedicated to Shohei Ohtani's beloved dog. The Dodgers even held a wildly popular bobblehead night featuring both Ohtani and Decoy, with fans lining up for hours to get one.

Hence, whether it's championship celebrations or team milestones, Decoy's always part of the moment, sporting his own blue-and-white Dodgers jersey. MLB clearly tried to tap into that fan favorite appeal. But in doing so, they might've unintentionally poured fuel on the ongoing debate about the league's supposed favoritism toward the Dodgers.

Fans are calling out MLB for being biased towards the Dodgers

How many more posts will be bombarded by MLB citing the Dodgers' win? The Fans wonder. "I've never hated a dog before, but here we are. Ippei Mizuhara is innocent," one fan said. "New level of glazing unlocked at MLB," added another. So, for the fans, MLB's bombardment of Dodgers posts on their social media handles shows its strategy to milk the Dodgers' huge fanbase. It's nothing but flattering the Dodgers. Moreover, the fans are wondering how the World Series win is related to paying tribute to Ohtani's pet.

"God, I wish we could see the timeline of this account if the Blue Jays won. Account would probably be so quiet," one fan is skeptical, whether the same would have happened had the Blue Jays won the World Series. "Y'all have officially gone too far with this," added another.

Well, check MLB's X handle after the conclusion of the World Series, and you'll know how the majority of the posts are about the Dodgers. However, the fans' accusation that MLB might not have done the same had the Jays won the ring could be countered. If you remember, just before the series decider of the ALCS, MLB's post about the Jays pissed off the fans. At that time, the league was accused of bias towards the Jays. "The slobbering this account does over the Dodgers is disgusting." Fans can't just keep calm.

Nevertheless, we think MLB's objective was to share a funny take about how Decoy is also a part of the Dodgers' consecutive World Series journey. But it just amplified a long-overdue debate featuring the Dodgers.

Denny Hamlin was three laps away from the biggest win of his career – and then ten laps later (including 10 laps of an overtime period), it all fell apart to the most devastating loss he's ever suffered.

In the fifth Championship Four edition of his 21 years in the Cup Series, Hamlin did everything he needed to do to win, including leading a race-high 208 laps.

Even Kyle Larson, who ultimately stole the title away from Hamlin, said the No. 11 Toyota ran a "perfect" race.

But while Hamlin may have run a perfect race, the finish was far from it. Larson finished third in the extended overtime stanza behind race winner Ryan Blaney and runner-up Brad Keselowski, while Hamlin finished a devastating sixth.

"I really don't have much for emotion right now," Hamlin said in his somber post-race press conference. "Just numb about it because I'm just in shock.

"We're 40 seconds from a championship. It's just unfortunate. … Gosh, you work so hard. This sport can drive you absolutely crazy 'cause sometimes speed, talent, all that stuff, just does not matter."

Trying to recoup his emotions, Hamlin even tried to interject a bit of humor in his post-race comments, but those definitely had to be bittersweet words coming through a clenched smile

"Golly, in this moment, I never want to race a car ever again," Hamlin said. "I mean, my fun meter is pegged."

Questions remain on how Hamlin lost a championship that should have been his

How Hamlin lost the 721 start of his 21-year Cup career will be debated for a long time

Was crew chief Chris Gale, in his first year atop the pit box with Hamlin, wrong in going for four tires on the final pit stop when Larson only took two?

Should Hamlin have stayed on a low line in the last two laps to potentially gain some valuable ground on Larson, which could have wound up with a totally different outcome?

Was Larson, who earned his second career Cup championship to go along with his first in 2021, a deserving champion?

After all the criticism NASCAR took following two-time winner Jesse Love beating 10-time winner Connor Zilisch for the Xfinity Series championship on Saturday, how Larson won is likely not going to sit well not only with Hamlin fans, but NASCAR fans in general – except, of course, fans of Larson and Hendrick Motorsports.

That's why it'll behoove NASCAR to come up with a new format for next season, as both Love and Larson's titles will not exactly be looked upon as legitimate by many.

"Kyle Larson has the trophy, but we dominated," Hamlin said. "We did our job. We did the best we could. They're a championship team and a championship driver.

"They're going to win a hell of a lot more than just these two. When everyone had to bring their best, I think it was evident who was the best today."

Hamlin likely will receive sympathy from even his non-fans

Even if you aren't a Hamlin fan, you can't help but feel sympathy for him, from both a competitive and personal nature. Of the latter, his father Dennis is seriously ill from an undisclosed disease, too ill to come to Phoenix, and Hamlin said Sunday's race potentially could be the last race his father will ever watch his son compete in.

Hamlin dedicated Sunday's race not only to his father, but also to the late JD Gibbs, son of team owner Joe Gibbs, who discovered Hamlin nearly 25 years ago as a raw but promising talent driving in short track races on the East Coast. Hamlin even named his first son, born earlier this year, after the younger Gibbs.

Even though Hamlin has 60 career Cup wins, he didn't necessarily need to win Sunday's race. He just needed to finish one spot ahead of his three Championship 4 contenders: Larson, William Byron, and Hamlin's Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Chase Briscoe.

In a sense, Hamlin has become his generation's Mark Martin. The NASCAR Hall of Famer finished runner-up to the championship five times in his Cup career. Ironically, Martin's last season – 2013 – was the last before the Cup playoff format was expanded to four rounds and 16 drivers.

Hamlin has now reached the Championship Four five times, and Sunday was the first time he finished second. He also finished second in 2010, before the format was expanded.

Hamlin was stunned after pulling his car to the pit road

While Larson was jumping up and down, celebrating with his team and family on the frontstretch before moving the party to Victory Lane, where he accepted his second Bill France Trophy, Hamlin was left in silence to collect his thoughts.

NBC cameras caught Hamlin sitting alone in his car for several minutes, a look of utter disbelief on his face. He was stunned, perhaps more so than he ever had been in his racing career.

To have the one thing he's never earned in his Cup tenure to be taken away from him so close to the finish line, you couldn't help but shed tears for Hamlin, just as he shed tears pre-race when he was interviewed and asked about his father.

Although his daughters cried their eyes out after the race, there were no tears from Hamlin, at least none that were shed publicly. He is to be commended for holding it all together when he patiently answered the questions that were posed to him.

"(There was) nothing I can do different," Hamlin said of the outcome. "Prepared as good as I could coming into the weekend. My team gave me a fantastic car. It just didn't work out. I was just praying that no caution (and then) had one there.

"What can you do? Just was not meant to be."

Making things even more difficult to handle emotionally was the fact that Larson didn't even lead one lap in the race, yet walked away with a seven-figure championship check and the trophy.

Hamlin enjoyed one of his most successful seasons this year, earning a series-high six wins, third-most of his career. The fact that he turns 44 years old on November 18 is not lost on him when he was asked if he could return to the Championship 4 next season and finally win that elusive first Cup crown.

"I'll try," Hamlin said with a slight shrug of his shoulders. "I've got a couple more shots at it."

But Could Hamlin Chuck It All And Abruptly Call It a Career?

He's under contract to JGR through the 2027 season before he either calls it a career or potentially finishes with one season with the Cup team he co-owns with NBA legend Michael Jordan, 23XI Racing.

But one has to wonder if Hamlin potentially may do what former teammate Carl Edwards did after the 2016 season: he walked away and retired shortly after losing the championship to Jimmie Johnson.

The Chesterfield, Virginia, native is also realistic. What happened Sunday could potentially be his last good chance at winning the Cup crown.

"Man, if you can't win that one, I don't know which one you can win," Hamlin said with dejection.

To his credit, William Byron empathized with the outcome for Hamlin. They had a great battle, with each running within one position of each other for more than 30% of the race, before Byron's incident with three laps left in regulation after a tire blew out and he clipped the outside retaining wall.

"I hate that, hate it for Denny, I hate it for the 11 team," Byron said. "I mean, Denny was on his way to it. I hate that."

Given Hamlin's emotional tribute to his father in a prerace NBC interview, he was asked after the race what he'll tell his father when he sees him upon his return from Phoenix.

"I did the best I could," Hamlin said. "Everything I really prepared for happened today. I felt like we responded. … The team brought a great championship car. I felt like I drove it just right up until two laps to go. This is the part that stinks."

Not taking anything away from Larson's crown, but in a sense a Hamlin championship would have been exactly the kind of storyline that NASCAR needed in a season that has seen significant fan criticism – particularly with the playoff format – and reduced at-track attendance and lower TV ratings, not to mention the bitter lawsuit between NASCAR and 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports are mired in.

NASCAR is reportedly planning on changing the current playoff format for next season, but particularly for Hamlin, it will be too little, too late.
